Predictable Positive Learning Environment and/or Behavior Tip of the Week: Strategies for Students Who Refuse to Work
Instructional Coaches Corner: I Noticed, I Wondered, and Active Engagement Strategies
I Noticed…all the hard work you do at following district expectations even when it is time consuming and frustrating at times when you feel like you are dealing with limited resources. You are making gains in what the research is saying is best for students and learning. This is being noticed on a daily basis by students, coworkers, and administrators!! You are awesome!
I Wonder…what would happen if we took Kid President’s advice and said these “20 Words We Should Say More Often” to eachother. According to Kid President, if we eat more corndogs there will be more happy people. Let’s focus on continuing to grow our school culture to a more positive one and eat more corndogs!! You can do it!
Active Engagement Resources
(Created by Lees Summit R-7 School District PLC)
Quiz, Quiz, Trade
To utilize Quiz, Quiz Trade in your classroom provide each student with a different "knowledge level" question. They roam around the room, pair up with another student, take turns asking and answer their questions, trade cards, and move on to find another student. To raise the level of cognitive engagement, have students create the questions.
Give One, Get One
To facilitate Give One, Get One, provide each student with a paper with two columns; one is labeled Give One; the other, Get One. The teacher asks a question. Students generate responses and write them in their Give One column. Using Stand Up, Hand Up, Pair Up, students will form pairs with classmates who are not on their team. Each partner Gives One to his/her partner and then Gets One response. Each student records the response he/she received in his/her Get One column. Students continue to form new pairs giving, receiving, and recording responses until sheets are completed. When all students have finished, or time is up, they return to their teams and compare lists.

Confidentiality and FERPA
Below are some reminders about our responsibility with FERPA....
What is FERPA? Passed in 1974 with numerous amendments over the years, the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) generally states that student education records are confidential and cannot be disclosed without the consent of a parent/legal guardian or eligible students. Only persons with a legitimate educational interest- need to know to do a job- including consultants and volunteers. Who is bound by FERPA? Everyone who is working in our school is bound by FERPA including volunteers. What does this mean? It means you must be mindful about what you talk about and who you talk to. Conversations at the dinner table, the ballpark, on social media whether they are positive or negative may be a violation of FERPA if you can identify the child- it violates confidentiality. Simple things like these are possible and probable violations of FERPA depending on the situation: After grading math tests for a teacher, a volunteer goes out to eat with friends and states, “half of the class failed the math test today.” “Wow, Jane Doe got in trouble in class today.” “There’s a girl, I can’t tell you her name, but she has blonde hair and sits close to the front of the room, she really struggles with handwriting.” “I was in class today and a student in Mrs. Jane Doe’s class threw a pencil across the room.” “There was a child screaming in Mrs. Jane Doe’s class today.” “Jane Doe got an “A” on her test today!” “Jane Doe threw up in class today.” Taking pictures or videos of students to send to other parents, your spouse, friends… While volunteers, paras, and teachers have “legitimate educational interest” and a need to know information, they are bound by the confidentiality of FERPA. It’s not just good policy…it’s the law.
