Weekly Message
an Update from Dr. Barbara A. Russell 10/6/21
Greetings PV Families
As we look to this weekend, it is a long one for our students. Monday is an inservice day and there is no school for students. The day is recognized as Columbus Day, a federal holiday that commemorates the landing of Christopher Columbus in the Americas in 1492. For many, the holiday honors Columbus’ achievements and celebrates Italian-American heritage. In recent years, this holiday has expanded in select states and cities to also be recognized as Indigenous Peoples' Day. The purpose of Indigenous Peoples’ Day is not to erase Columbus Day from history, but rather to recognize, honor, and celebrate the Native American cultures and people who have inhabited the Americas since long before European explorers arrived. In our schools and all that we do as a District, we are creating greater awareness about all who should be recognized and celebrated in our school communities and community at large. As a note, the Business meeting of the Board of School Directors has been shifted from Monday, October 11 to Tuesday, October 12.
On to other news, we are excited to introduce a new area of our website: PV Showcase. Although currently, and since last evening, we have been experiencing interruptions of service on our pvsd.org website. You may have noticed some intermittent interruptions in accessing our school sites. Please know we are working with our vendor to resolve the issues. Earlier this week, it was Facebook and Instagram who were down, and now it's the PV website. What a week! However, the monthly PV Showcase is a site to share news and happenings from around the district. In this edition, you can learn about the 200 Club, RetroRobotics, various math learning activities, and more!
Sincerely,
Dr. Barbara A. Russell

High School ONLY - Asynchronous Day 10/13 for PSAT Testing
PSAT assessments are coming up on October 13th for a number of our 10th and 11th graders. Last year the pandemic forced us to rethink and redesign many of our common practices, scheduling of assessments being one of them. Based upon the effectiveness of last year’s administration, we will be conducting an asynchronous day (high school only) for this year’s PSAT administration. We will continue to provide in person instruction for our low incidence special education students and provide transportation to all test takers and NMTCC students.
Dr. Moss, high school principal, will provide specific details in her weekly communications.
Comprehensive Plan - MidPoint Review
The Pennsylvania Department of Education requires all school districts to engage in Comprehensive Planning every six years. In 2017, a committee of stakeholders collaborated to define our District’s mission, vision, and goals. This year we will be engaging in a mid point review of our Comprehensive Plan. We welcome your voice to the process! Please consider joining us. Learn more on our website.
Power Packs
Bags of food, including 2 breakfast items, 2 lunch items, 2 snacks, and 2 fruits, are sent home with students prior to every weekend. There is no financial information required to participate in this program and students pick up their bags from their counselor or designated person every week.

Special Education Partnership Opportunities
What is an IEP? My child is struggling, and I don’t know what to do! How is a 504 different from an IEP? Oftentimes, these are questions or concerns we hear. This year we are excited to offer a series of opportunities for our families in efforts to build partnerships and provide information to questions you may have about the supports and services available to you and your child. Please see the list of dates below for Special Education (SE) Roundtable sessions and MCIU Local Task Force meetings.
For more information about the MCIU Local Task Force and links to additional resources, please click HERE. If you have any questions or wish to learn more about these opportunities, then contact Dr. Kimberly Boyd, Director of Special Education at 610-489-8506 ext. 1106 or via email at kboyd@pvsd.org.
