Meet Mrs. Melby
Hi, my name is Nicole Melby. This year I am teaching 6th-8th grade Special Education. It is hard to believe it is already the end of the first quarter. Everyone is starting to settle into a routine and a schedule again.
At the middle school level, I spend a lot of my time teaching students good study skill habits. What are study skills? Study skills are skills students need to enable them to study and to learn efficiently. They are an important set of life skills. Developing good study skills will increase confidence, competence, and self-esteem. They can also reduce anxiety about tests and deadlines. Good study habits are important for success in school. If a student develops these skills now, he or she will be more successful in high school and beyond.
These are a few helpful study skills to use with students:
-Help your child get organized - use a system that works for them: use folders for each subject or have one folder for all subjects- like a binder
-Provide a place your child can do his or her homework or study at home
-Have your child use a planner to keep track of assignments
-Make a to-do list and complete assignments that are due first
It is important to develop these skills early. I ask parents to check their child’s grades on JMC on a regular basis. Then talk to your child about what is missing and set up a to-do list by prioritizing his or her work.
The key for your child’s success is working together as a team. This includes your child, the teacher, and you as a parent. We all want your child to succeed!!!
See inside Mr. Stevenson's Room
Hello everyone! Mr. Stevenson here to tell you about what we have been doing in Title 1 this year.
In Title reading classes we have worked on everything from letter recognition to letter sounds at the Kindergarten levels and have worked on sight words and beginning sentence reading at the first grade level. In 2nd grade we are working on chunking words and sentence reading also. We are working on comprehension and fluency in the older grade levels. We have explored many different ways to accomplish this task and we are getting more confident in what we are doing!
In Title math we are working on number identification in the lower levels to addition, subtractions, multiplication, and division in the upper levels. We are focused on improving our basic understanding of math facts right now and mastering those facts as they will help us with math for the rest of the year.
Title is a place where kids come to get the additional help they may need in reading or math. We really focus on strategies that help them gain better knowledge of concepts in those subject areas. Most importantly the students feel comfortable and are engaged while working on these skills.
