Mary's Mount Primary School
Term 2, Week 5 - 27 May 2022
National Sorry Day Prayer
Almighty and loving God,
you who created ALL people in your image,
Lead us to seek your compassion as we listen to the stories of our past. You gave your only Son, Jesus, who died and rose again so that sins will be forgiven.
We place before you the pain and anguish of dispossession of land, language, lore, culture and family kinship that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have experienced. We live in faith that all people will rise from the depths of despair and hopelessness. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families have endured the pain and loss of loved ones, through the separation of children from their families.
We are sorry and ask God’s forgiveness.
Touch the hearts of the broken, homeless and inflicted and heal their spirits. In your mercy and compassion walk with us as we continue our journey of healing to create a future that is just and equitable.
Lord, you are our hope. Amen.

What an exceptional day. Thank you to the staff, children and parents who helped throughout the day. We had such a fun day, and the children who helped us were so well behaved and just a pleasure to have there. We have added up the money and are really excited to tell you we raised $1087.80 on the day from the seeds, worm tea, fairy floss and donations too!
A wonderful week to be at Mary’s Mount Primary School
I had a milestone birthday this week and the students, staff, and extended MMPS community helped me celebrate. I felt so very special when I arrived at school to find my office decorated with love hearts filled with affirmations. It is heart-warming to know that the children perceive me as someone who cares for them, that I have a big smile, I organise things for them, and I am kind and funny. My favourite comment was that I was a great principal, but not as good as Mr Sorg! Thank you to everyone for making me feel so special.
ASCENSION OF THE LORD -Year 1 Mass
This morning the wonderful Year 1 class lead us in Mass. The children did a marvellous job with the readings and the whole school sang so beautifully. Thank you to Father Bill for celebrating mass for us today. We loved listening to your homily and stories. A special thank you to Miss Thresher who supported the children in preparing for this mass.
SLEEP HYGIENE
I attended a Catholic Principal information day last Friday and an important topic covered, was sleep. Not only for our young children, but for ourselves. Development of sleep routines that prepare your body for sleep are important for us all, no matter our age. My goal is to get 7-8 hours each night so that I do not fall into the danger zone of ‘fatigue’ due to not getting enough sleep (I will let you know how I go!).
A Good Night’s Sleep
Sleep is our primary source of recovery and should be held in very high regard when it comes to ensuring our health and our families’ health. We all know how we feel if we don’t get enough sleep. Tired, lethargic, and unmotivated. If we have repeated nights of insufficient rest, fatigue will build and build until you become sick and unable to engage in regular day-to-day activities.
Nights where we have a bad sleep are inevitable. It is normal for our sleep to suffer when we are stressed at work, at home, have a newborn, or for many other reasons. If it can be avoided, try not to engage in any high intensity exercise on days when you are not adequately rested. Try to listen to your body in these situations. Develop good physical awareness and body honesty to help you notice how you’re waking up every day. Pay attention to your body and be honest with yourself – if you need to rest, do so.
Sleeping well means getting enough sleep. How much sleep is enough varies among people. The number of hours you sleep is not as important as how you feel when you wake up. If you do not feel refreshed, you probably need more sleep.
Poor sleep can affect emotional and social interaction and increase risk of developing disease and depression. Make sure to get a good night’s rest where possible.
Top tips for a good night sleep:
- Sleep is our best source of recovery. Sufficient sleep boosts our immunity, muscular recovery, and cognitive function. Make sure to rest adequately after restless sleep.
- Be aware of your own body – listen to your body. Notice how much rest and recovery you are getting. Pay attention to your body and its signs. Neglect can lead to injury. Ensure you are getting at least 6 hours of a sleep a night.
- Be consistent and maintain a routine and rhythm. Try to go to bed and wake up at the same time every day. Set a good example and get the kids in the routine too.
- Ensure you spend time in natural light. This helps to promote melatonin production in the body which tells you when to sleep and when to wake up.
- Reduce blue light exposure in the evening. Blue light from electronic devices tricks your brain into thinking it’s still daytime which impacts your sleep.
- Find time to relax and clear your mind before sleep. For example, listen to relaxing music, deep breathing, or meditation.

INTERSCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY
Congratulations to the children selected to represent Mary’s Mount Primary School in the interschool cross country tomorrow. We wish them all the best and know that they will run their hearts out for Mary’s Mount Primary School.
SCHOOL PHOTOS
Next Tuesday 31st is school photo day. Staff photos kick off at 8am followed by family photos and then class photos throughout the day. Please remember neat hair and polished shoes. We have also made arrangements for any students who will be absent on photo day to visit MSP and have their portrait taken within two weeks of photo day.
NATIONAL SORRY DAY and RECONCILIATION WEEK 2022
Today, we acknowledge the past policies and practices which caused hurt, dispossession and loss of connection, language and identity for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. We acknowledge that there needs to be recognition of the impact of past policies and practices and healing between non-Aboriginal and Aboriginal peoples.
The first National Sorry Day was held on 26 May 1998, one year after the Bringing Them Home report was presented to parliament. The Bringing Them Home report was the result of an inquiry into the forcible removal of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families and recommended an apology and reparations to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
This National Sorry Day, let us all reflect on the need for genuine reconciliation – not just in word, but in deed and in action. Genuine reconciliation requires acknowledgement of the harm done by those enacting past policies, and those who did not act out against these policies, so that healing can reach the whole community. Today, and every day moving forward, we are invited to be brave and tackle the unfinished business of reconciliation so we can make change for the benefit of all Australians.
Monday 30 May – National Sorry Day Liturgy 2.15pm
On Monday 30 May, Mary’s Mount Primary School will be holding a liturgy in the St Joseph’s school hall to deepen our understanding and acknowledgement of this important Day of Reconciliation. During next week the children will engage in activities that will enhance their understanding of the significance of Reconciliation Week as a nation.
NEW CULOTTES
Our new school culottes arrived today! Thank you for your patience. They will be packaged up and sent home tomorrow with everyone who has already placed an order. I can't wait to see our students wearing them next week!

You would have noticed that the Chapel still has fencing around the exterior. Mary’s Mount Primary School is working in collaboration with CEWA Ltd to resolve this issue. We are keen to be able to use our facilities as soon as possible and have this resolved. We thank you for your patience.

Children will need to wear their correct full winter uniform, including shirt, pants, winter dress or culottes, school tie (see note below), jumper, school socks, school hair ties, polished shoes and be well groomed (no tights). Students will wear the school tie for photos, however if you don't have a tie, we will have spares available for students to borrow on photo day.
Ordering Photos
Orders for student photos need to be placed online. Your personalised Online Order Information Slip has been sent home with each student. The slip provides you with detailed instructions on how to order and pay for your photos online. Please read the instructions on your child’s order form carefully to ensure that your order is correct. Order slips DO NOT need to be returned to the class teacher or school. Last day for online ordering is 7 June 2022. Orders placed after this date will incur a substantial late fee, so please note this date.
Family Portraits
If you have more than one child at MMPS and are interested in having a group portrait of your children, you will need to collect a “Family Photo Order Form” from the front office. The Family Photo Order Form needs to be returned in the drop off box to the front office by Friday 27 MAY including payment. Payment details for these photos are included on the family forms. Should you not collect and pay for a family portrait, the family photo will not be taken.
Family portraits will commence at 8.30am on school photo day and parents will be responsible for taking their children to St Joseph’s Hall for these photos. It is imperative that families who are having family portraits are on time and ready to commence at 8.30am.

LAST SUNDAY AT THE KALAMUNDA GARDEN FESTIVAL
SOCIAL WORKER CORNER
Resilience is being able to bounce back from stress, challenge, and adversity. And the great news is that resilience is something that can be nurtured in all children. Helping our children to grow into healthy, thriving adults is complex, but it is not about clearing all challenges and adversity out of their way. Of course, sometimes we would like to pick them up and lift them over the things that cause them to stumble, but it wouldn’t necessarily be doing them any favours. Navigating through challenges alongside supportive adults, can help our children to develop the skills they need to flourish.
In the below video Dr Kaylene Henderson shares some simple tips on helping us as parents support our children to build resilience through allowing them to face both the ups and downs of life.
She encourages us that children need repeated practice in dealing with manageable setbacks and disappointments. She shares that often what we can do to support them best is not to rescue them. But rather, to let them know that we understand their disappointment and will help them to navigate the challenges that arise.
While it might be tempting to protect our child from setbacks and disappointments, we are giving them a greater gift by teaching them to manage these situations and building their resilience along the way.
