Yarbrough Elementary September Newsletter
From the Principal's Pen
I can’t believe it is already September, and we are entering our second month of the school year. The start of this school year was as smooth as I can ever remember in my ten years at Yarbrough Elementary, and it is because of the hard work of a lot of people. Our faculty and staff pulled together and welcomed one of our largest classes in years. We added three additional units and many new faces to our staff. We hope that you will find our building a warm and welcoming environment for you and your children.
I want to extend a huge thank you to our Yarbrough Elementary PTO. Our PTO has gone over and above in making sure we are ready to receive students on the first day of school. From organizing memberships, to selling t-shirts to distributing boxes of paper to our teachers, they did it all. Our luncheon was a great way to thank our staff for their hard work in preparing for the school year. However, their work is not done. The PTO is currently planning for our Royal Run fundraiser. If you are interested in helping in any way please visit our YES Parents Facebook Page to find an area where you can help.
This is an extra special year for me because my own son is returning to Yarbrough Elementary. We are counting down the days until we leave for 4H Camp and can experience the event together. I hope you are able to find some meaningful ways to make connections with your children. I strongly believe the bonds that we build when our children are young will make the challenging teenage years ahead a little easier.
Thank you as always for your support of Yarbrough Elementary,
Pete Forster

Checking Your Students Grades with Parent Portal
You can access your child’s grades at any time from the Parent Portal link at the bottom of the YES website. Please contact Charlene Thomas at 887-1919 to request a login and password.
Fun + Learning = Moby Max
Title 1 students are using the Moby Max program to enhance reading skills. This is an educational program that covers many academic subjects and can be used at home, too. Students can work to improve or enrich academic skills. One of the most exciting features of this program is that students can earn game time to reward them for their hard work! All students at Yarbrough Elementary have access to this site. If you need your child’s user name and log in, please email Heather Taylor at hwtaylor@auburnschools.org.
Help a fourth grader, eat a donut!
The 4th graders are selling doughnuts for a 4H Camp fundraiser. Order forms are due on September 4th and doughnut pick up is scheduled for September 18th. If you have a 4th grader, be sure to sell as many doughnuts as you can! Doughnuts will be for sale in the car line on September 18th. Please make plans to help support our fourth graders!
4H Camp, Here We Come!

Nurse Notes with Nurse Julia
Head lice cases are increasing, with an estimated 6-12 million infestations every year in the US, most commonly among children ages 3-11. According to the CDC and American Academy of Pediatrics, lice are unlikely to be spread in the school setting or by indirect contact with personal items such as helmets, headphones and pillows, but rather during activities like sleepovers and campouts, when direct or prolonged head-to-head contact occurs.
Prevention begins at home.
- Learn how to identify lice, the steps to take if lice are found, and how to decrease the chance of spreading it.
- Teach your child to avoid head-to-head contact with others during activities and sleepovers.
- Check your child’s head weekly for signs of lice infestation.
- Talk to your health care provider about the best treatment for your child if lice are found. Resistance to over the counter treatments exists and repeated use of these products may be harmful.
- Information on our school district guidelines regarding lice can be found in our Pupil Progression Plan on pages 59-60.
The Counseling Connection with Mrs. Walsh
Every class has now had at least one Guidance Counseling lesson. I am enjoying getting acquainted with your children. We have learned our new “counseling cheer” for the year. Please have your child perform it for you. We are all excited to belong to our Y.E.S. family.
We are stressing how we need to show respect and use manners with all of our friends at school as well as at home. Thanks for your support in this area as well.
I also would like to encourage all of our students to learn their address and phone number. I have found out through a student assessment that many of our students do not know this information. This information empowers a child and may be beneficial to them in many different situations.
Tip of the Day: A positive attitude covers many disappointments.
A positive attitude focuses on the good things ahead.
A positive attitude realizes there will be some “bumps” to fall over on the path to success.
A positive attitude keeps trying and moving forward. ( Donna B. Forrest)

During the month of September, we will focus on Habit 2, Begin with the End in Mind. Students will be setting academic and behavior goals in their classrooms. Please ask your child what goals they have set and help them monitor their progress towards reaching those goals.
Habit 2: Begin with the End in Mind
Key Phrase: I have a plan!
What this habit looks like in action: I set goals for myself. I have a plan for how I will accomplish my goals. I think about what I want to be when I grow up and how I will get there.
