Message from the Director
Happy New Year! Like millions of people around the world, this time of year I like to set goals or "resolutions." Self improvement really means that you're trying to lessen or correct failures, which in turn improves your quality of life and offers greater peace of mind. People fail because they’re people and people fail. This is fact. That means everyone on our team fails. I fail (repeatedly). No exceptions. Too often, people fear failure to the point that they don't try. Here’s what you can do to accept that failure is necessary for success and change the way you look at it. Work to minimize the frequency of your failures. Develop habits, processes, checklists, and systems that will help you get more things right more often. Don't get stuck in the "we've always done it this way" trap. Work to minimize the impact of your failures. Plan well. Try things out. Early, inexpensive failures can often save you from more expensive failures later. When you or someone on the team fails, fix things quickly. The situation can go from bad to worse, unless you step in to stop it. Learn from your failures. There are lessons lurking in every failure. Learn them and apply them as needed. This is why failure leads to success. Most of all, find the opportunity in the failure. The Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius said, almost 2,000 years ago, that "the obstacle becomes the way." Over the next several weeks, I will focus on improving organization and time management skills. Being "busy" doesn't necessarily mean working productively. In fact, it can waste your time and keep you from important tasks. I know that I need a structured system to stay organized otherwise it's too easy to get lost down a rabbit hole with interruptions. Prioritizing is a must, especially now when we are doing so much with so little. Check out the digital edition of School Nutrition magazine below. There is a great article on how you can use the principals of HACCP to help you prioritize your tasks. The 3 minute video below explains the "Eisenhower Matrix," a system used by Stephen Covey for his book The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People. This is something everyone can use at work and at home to make time for what's really important. Thank you for being so willing to change and adapt. I love the suggestions, ideas and questions I'm receiving from you and it's making a huge impact! It truly means a lot to me having your help and knowing that we are all in this together.
With gratitude,
Kathy

Weather Delays
If bad weather is anticipated, take precautions by leaving any perishable products in the walk-ins, not milk coolers, merchandisers or pass throughs. If you have SmartGuards monitoring the temperature of your walk-ins, be sure the battery has sufficient life before leaving.
