The Sioux City Community School District will again offer the ACT to all juniors during the 2019/2020 school year. Students in the class of 2021 will all be given the ACT test on April 21, 2020. This test will be offered at no cost to the student. Data from this exam will allow the District to analyze how curriculum aligns with the ACT, and in turn, help educators continue to prepare students for success. Attendance is required for all juniors on April 21, 2020. By offering the ACT during a day built into the school calendar, the District is able to ensure all students have access to take the exam. The ACT is beneficial to all students to help them make plans for future success after high school. While the curriculum taught up to this point has helped prepare students for the ACT exam, there are additional supports available for students to consider. The Sioux City Community School District offers ACT Test Prep courses, which are available at no extra cost to the student. The test prep course can be built into the student’s regular school schedule. If you would like to explore having an ACT Test Prep course added to your student’s schedule, please contact the school counseling office. Thank you.

STUDENT NEWS & INFORMATION:
East High is collecting Hy-Vee receipts in the main office for Hy-Vee Cash 4 Students. Please drop off your receipts dated from August 1st to present. Hy-Vee will donate a percentage back to East High for every dollar spent.
Student Handbook Reminder: Students should not be in the halls or classrooms before 7:45am and after 3:05pm unless they have a pass from a teacher or are involved in the current season’s activity. At the end of the day we expect students who are not involved in school activities to leave the school grounds by 3:05 pm. (As always, if you child is needing to be in the school before or after hours and they are not in a current activity please don't hesitate to call the school and make proper arrangements. Student safety is one of the many goals that East High strives for at all times.)
Student Handbook Reminder: The Sioux City Community School District has a Closed Campus Policy. Students are not allowed to leave campus for lunch (see School Board Policy 505.14). Students may purchase a lunch or bring a lunch from home. Outside commercial food is not allowed or to be brought to students for lunch. Students are not to be in the hallways during lunch unless they have a pass from a staff member.
Students just a quick reminder that when you are crossing the street to please use the appropriate crosswalks, this keeps you safe as we have a lot of traffic passing through every day. If you are dropping someone off, please make sure that you do not park over a crosswalk so that students can cross the parking lot safely.
The East High Thrift Shop is located downstairs in the AEC. There is clothing available if needed for any occasion. Did you forget your gym clothes? We can help! Can’t find a coat? We can help! Visit us through the big double doors located downstairs and remember all of the items are FREE! Mrs. Elder is glad to help.
Students that are in need of Food 4 Thought bags can head down to Office 107 at the end of the day on the last school day of the week. These bags are for home use, if opened at school students will no longer be allowed to receive one.
Students, as you may have noticed there are signs on the doors reminding you to not let anyone in the school. Due to recent events we would really like for visitors and students to ring the doorbell to get in the building. If we all follow this protocol we can monitor who is coming into our school at all times. Also, please do not remove these signs from the doors.
VAPES ARE ILLEGAL regardless of what is in them. Getting caught in possession with one is a violation of the student code and will result in school consequences, an athletic code violation (making you ineligible for athletics and activities), and a $50 ticket plus a mandatory court appearance from the police. YOUR AGE DOES NOT MATTER, it is a violation for all students. SOCIAL MEDIA PICTURES OF YOU VAPING CAN LEAD TO THESE SAME CONSEQUENCES.
This includes “Juuling”, Juul pods are not permitted on school grounds and the consequences are the same as any other tobacco products.
PARKING NOTICE: Just a reminder to students that there is to be no parking along or on any yellow curb, on a sidewalk, in front of any entrance, on the grass, in front of any gate leading to any part of the school grounds, in visitor parking or handicap parking, or where any cones have been set up, etc. The bottom line, students should be parking in actual parking spots and not making up their own parking spots. This is so O&M, contractors, delivery drivers, bus drivers and (if necessary) emergency personnel can easily access those parts of the building and grounds. Students that are parking incorrectly may not be warned going forward and take the risk of being towed. Also, if you are parking on the street please make sure that you are not parking in front any of East High’s neighbor’s driveways, mailboxes, etc.
MINOR SCHOOL PERMIT: Students and Parents of students who are driving on a minor school permit should read over the school driving permit rules attachment. A quick few bullet points are:
- Students must take the most direct route from their home to their school and vice versa.
- Students can only travel to and from their school between the hours of 5:00 AM and 10:00 PM; this rule supersedes the curfew law.
- Students can ONLY travel to an activity they are involved in as long as the school is a bordering school to the Sioux City Community School District and not more than 25 miles away.
- Students cannot drive to an activity they are not participating in even if it is at their school of enrollment.
- Once the student’s activity is over, the student must go home (for example, a JV player cannot stay to attend a Varsity game).
- Students can have one minor household member in their vehicle at a time as long as they are traveling to the same school.
- Students can stop for fuel at the closest station to their route home or to school
If you have any questions about these rules, please call the Iowa DOT at (515) 244-8725.
Western Iowa Tech Community College offers a variety of Teen Driver’s Education classes, to register for one of their classes please call WITCC at (712) 274-6418. The class dates are either March 2nd – April 20th, June 1st – June 24th, or July 6th – July 29th.*
SILVER CORD OPPORTUNITIES:
There is a terrific resource for students who are working on earning their Silver Cord or meeting community service requirements. This is an online volunteer center for Siouxland, there are now more than 100 nonprofit organizations on VolunteerSiouxland.org, with more than 50 active needs for volunteers on any given day. It is absolutely the EASIEST way for students to find and sign up for volunteer opportunities. It’s also the easiest way to track their volunteer hours – confirmed by the organization. We’ve even added a field to volunteer profiles so they can identify which school they attend, allowing us to provide reports to the schools. And, it’s completely free for the organizations and the volunteers! Finding volunteer opportunities has NEVER been easier!*
Please see Ms. Benson in the Main Office for Silver Cord (http://www.siouxcityschools.org/east-high-school/general-academic-information-2/) opportunities.
