Year 5 Newsletter
Term 2 - Friday 3rd March 2017
Welcome to the Year 5 Newsletter
Dear Parents,
It's been a busy few weeks since our last edition and a case of new beginnings...new UOI, new Maths number unit and a new English genre! Please see the updates for each area below.
A big thank you to all the parents who kindly donated a plate of treats to both of our Year 5 bake sales. We are extremely grateful! A special mention to the mums who came in to help set-up and assist the children on each of the days.
We'd also like to share our appreciation with the parents who have volunteered to assist on the forthcoming media trips to Central (dates below). The class teachers will be in contact with you shortly to provide further details. If you would still like to volunteer then please let us know!
Kind regards

Unit of Inquiry
How We Express Ourselves.
Central idea: People can create or manipulate messages to target specific audiences.
Lines of inquiry:
- How images, text and music are used to influence behaviour of target audiences (function)
- Critical evaluation of messages presented in the media (reflection/perspective)
- How people respond to messages (perspective/reflection)
The students have spent the first part of the unit immersed in different forms of media. Whilst we have started by looking at the advertisements they collected for homework, they are beginning to appreciate that media comes in many different forms.
The children then moved on by analysing a variety of media (e.g. adverts, paintings, brand logos). They thought about the creative techniques used to attract attention, target audiences, purpose, content and the actions that people might take in response to the media.
The homework this week (please check the VLE) will help the children further understand the concept of perspective which is another aspect of this unit.
Thank you to the parents who have offered to come in and speak to the children about advertising and marketing over the next few weeks.
Film Making and Producing
Mr Tibble has begun working with the children on the different aspects of film making from producing to directing and editing their own creations.

Watch out for their improved persuasive skills!

Maths
The 'I can' statements that will guide the unit are as follows:
• Read, write, compare and order common fractions and decimal fractions to hundredths or beyond
• Understand the relationship and convert between common fractions and decimal fractions
• Simplify fractions to the lowest common denominator
• Model, read, write and compare improper fractions and mixed numbers
• Model, read, write and compare percentages understanding them as the number of parts in every 100
• Model and solve simple problems involving ratio and proportion
• Model and solve simple problems involving fractions
We have also continued our strand unit on the properties of 2D and 3D shapes.
On Wednesday was 'World Maths Day'. The Year 5's celebrated by reading the book 'How much is a Million?' by David Schwartz. This inspired the children to create their own page of the book by thinking, measuring and calculating what a million of something (e.g. calculators, pencil cases, football pitches) would equate to. They then made a comparison of how big/tall/heavy that would be in real world terms (e.g. versus Mount Everest). Also, a big well done to the students who made it onto the 'Top 100 in Asia' leaderboard for Mathletics this week!
