The Week of April 8th

A MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL BAME

Dear Laurel Park Families,

Our March 31st Spring Spruce Up Event was a huge success! We were able to paint several interior walls (including our music room and cafeteria), update our front office area, plant flowers in exterior beds, and tidy up common spaces throughout our school. Please take a moment to see the pictures below, highlighting all of their hard work. We greatly appreciate the support of our school community!

In addition, the LPE Student Council raised over $700.00 for the Wake County SPCA. Students enjoyed donating spare change as they voted for their favorite staff pet picture. Ms. Maye's dog, Charlie, was the winning pup!

April 8th - 12th is National Volunteer Week. Throughout our school, students are writing letters to military personnel, designing placemats for Meals on Wheels, and writing thank you letters to our dedicated first responders. We hope these efforts will inspire our students to continue volunteering throughout the year!

If your family will be moving to another school next year, please take a moment to complete the following form: https://forms.gle/aAjMGQCH5rWapoPE9

Barnes and Noble Book Fair Night - Featured Student Art!

Many students will have artwork on display during the Barnes and Nobles night! Students will be notified if their work will be on display. Please enjoy the kaleidoscope of talent as literature and art are being celebrated on April 13th!

Please join us on Saturday, April 13th for our first ever Barnes and Noble Book Fair at the Cary location! We will be hosting a special event from 4:00-5:00 pm!

There will be a scavenger hunt, storytime by some special LPES guests, and art work on display from our LPES students. There will be a raffle for BN gift cards during the event! You must be present to win. Cookie decorating will also be available with purchase of a cookie either through pre-sale or at the Barnes and Noble cafe. A percentage of all sales will go the LPES PTA! This is a great time to shop for Mother's Day and Teacher Appreciation week.

There are multiple ways to shop this BN book fair. You can visit the Cary location anytime from 9:00 am -11:00 pm on Saturday, April 13th. You and your friends and family may also shop online for 5 days after the April 13th event. If you want to visit a Barnes and Noble store but your family is tracked out and you are in another city on April 13th, present our unique book fair ID number (12506879) so that the LPES PTA earns a percentage back on the purchase. That same number can be used for online purchases.

If you are interested in pre-purchasing cookies for the cookie decorating, please fill out the attached form so that we can have those cookies ready for your family. The forms can be turned in to your child's teacher or the front office. Other treats are also available for pre-order from the Barnes and Noble/Starbucks Cafe. You can pick-up your order on Saturday, April 13th.

April is Teacher Appreciation month at Barnes and Noble. Teachers will receive a discount on their purchases. Teacher wish lists will also be available!

School Garden Opportunity!

Exciting New Volunteer Opportunity in the LPES Edible Garden Coming Soon!

One of our primary goals is to provide every student at Laurel Park with the opportunity to engage with our school’s edible garden. Currently, we are developing garden "mini lessons" that align with the LPES science curriculum and will be piloting these lessons to the 1st and 4th grade classes this spring. We plan to roll out garden mini lessons across all grade levels during the 2019-2020 school year and will be seeking parent volunteers to facilitate mini lessons.

We hope to identify one "garden parent" per classroom to lead two mini lessons (approximately 30 minutes each) in the garden, one lesson in the late summer/early fall and the second in the spring. This will be a very low time commitment and previous gardening experience is not required! Each lesson kit will include step-by-step instructions for the activity, discussion questions (with answers!) and all needed materials. We are excited to offer this new opportunity to engage with your child’s class!

If this volunteer opportunity is of interest to you, please let us know at lpesgardenclub@gmail.com.

Single Subject Acceleration (SSA) Nomination and Testing Information for the 2019 - 2020 School Year

Single Subject Acceleration (SSA) is the practice of assigning students to a higher grade level for a single subject, than is typical, given the student's age, for the purpose of providing access to appropriately challenging learning opportunities. SSA is an accelerative practice that allows students to show mastery of an elementary or middle school course.

Students must meet qualifying Single Subject Acceleration (SSA) criteria in grades K‐7 to take advanced academic content in Mathematics or English Language Arts. Nominated students for Single Subject Acceleration (SSA) will be assessed at their school, based upon their current grade level. Depending on their grade level and subject, this could include a multiple-choice test and/or a writing sample.

Students can be nominated for SSA by either their teacher or parents. Students are allowed to take one SSA test, either ELA or Math. Students must score an 80% or higher to pass the Math SSA test and an 85% or higher and a level 2 on the written ELA test. Schools are only allowed to take SSA nomination forms during the nomination window and all testing is to be completed on the testing windows. No exceptions will be made.

If you are interested in your students being tested for SSA, please complete, sign and return the SSA nomination form during the nomination window. If you should have any questions, about whether your student should be tested, please see your student's current classroom teacher. If you have questions about SSA and the process, please feel free to email anyone on the LPES AIG team.

Sincerely,

Amy Stone at astone@wcpss.net

Ann-Marie Taranto at ataranto@wcpss.net

Sandy Sandel at ssandel@wcpss.net. Thank you!
