BWRSD Community Update 8/28/2020
Message from Jonathan Brice, Superintendent of Schools
Dear BWRSD community,
Thank you for your thoughtful questions and suggestions as many district staff continue to work to prepare for opening. We believe that we will have a definitive decision by the governor on Monday, August 31, 2020, about the plan that will be used to open BWRSD schools. There are multiple factors impacting the decision to reopen and we want you to know that as soon as the governor makes a decision, we will review the decision and its impact on our students, staff, and ability to open school.
It is important that all families check their ability to access our parent portal beginning next week. We will no longer mail student schedules, but instead provide student schedules in the parent portal, secured by unique access for each parent. In order to accommodate this change, we are delaying the release of student schedules until September 3, 2020. An email message will be sent to all listed contacts registered in the parent portal about the release of the schedules. This is why it is vital that parents/guardians update their contact information. Kindergarten families will receive their student schedules in the mail as they are new to the district and will need time before we have set them up in the parent portal.
Please remind your students about the important keys to staying healthy and well while attending school in person:
Wear your mask
Maintain social distance when at the bus stop, on the bus, in hallways, and classrooms,
Wash your hands frequently.
Complete the screening each day and stay home when sick.
Working together we will have a successful start to the school year.
Sincerely Yours,
Jonathan Brice, Ed.D.
Superintendent of Schools

1. Notification of Class Placement and Your Child's Teacher(s)
Families will be notified of their child’s teacher(s) on September 3rd through the Aspen Parent Portal. Information on how to access the Aspen Parent Portal is provided below.
2. Back to School Planning Information for Families
Parent Portal Account Access and Back to School Gateway
We have added a new Back to School Gateway to our Aspen student information system. This will provide an easy way for families to update their child's contact information, digitally. This system replaces the paper process that families typically complete in the beginning of a school year and provides real time updates on contact information, which is important in ensuring that families receive school and district communications and information related to school events, report cards, school closures, and schedule changes due to the COVID-19 virus.
Please see the following information for accessing the Aspen Parent Portal Website and updating your child's contact information through the Back to School Gateway.
What you will need:
-The Aspen Parent Portal Website https://ri-bwrsd.myfollett.com/aspen/logon.do
-Your child(ren)’s LASID(s)
-Your child(ren)’s date(s) of birth
1. Log into your Aspen parent portal. https://ri-bwrsd.myfollett.com/aspen/logon.do. If you need help getting into your portal, email portal@bwrsd.org.
2. Locate these two pieces of information first, as they will be how you get into the Back to School Gateway:
-The username/login ID for the Back to School Gateway is your child’s LASID, a number that begins with 96 (example: 96xxxxxxx). This can be found by clicking on the Family top tab in the Aspen Parent Portal. The LASID is next to your child’s name.
-The password for the Back to School Gateway is your child’s date of birth, with the forward slashes included. (example: mm/dd/yyyy)
3. Click on the link that says Back To School Gateway in the Announcements section. Use the child’s LASID and date of birth to log in.
4. Follow the screens to make any adjustments, and save at the end.
5. You will complete this process for each of your children.
3. School Start and Dismissal Times
The anticipated start and dismissal times for each school are below. Schools will provide information in the upcoming week about when students may begin arriving at school to reduce the number of students entering schools at one time. Bus transportation information will also be sent out. Each school has developed and will share, in the upcoming weeks, the different doors that will be used for specific grades of students to enter to also reduce the number of students entering the school.
High School (9 to 12)
Arrival: 7:40 a.m.
Dismissal: 2:25 p.m.
Middle School (6 to 8)
Arrival: 8:15 a.m.
Dismissal: 3:00 p.m.
Elementary Schools (PK to 5)
Arrival: 8:45 a.m.
Dismissal: 3:30 p.m.
4. Immunizations
Please be sure that your child has received all of the immunizations they need. If your child does not have health insurance, you can contact the RI health insurance exchange at 1-855-840-4774 to learn about coverage that may be available to you.
