Assistive Technology Consideration
When addressing “AT consideration” within the IEP process, it is important to realize that “consideration” is by nature a brief process that must be conducted during the development of every student’s annual IEP. At least one person on the IEP team should have some knowledge about AT. AT consideration requires that the team participate in a consistent decision-making process in relation to the student’s goals and objectives that facilitate access and progress in the general curriculum.
The consideration guide worksheet can be used as a tool to collect current information of what the student can do, and their barriers to accessing content and information. The results of the discussion can be ongoing and allows teams to move into trial of equipment, consultation with an AT specialist or, if the team needs more information, request further assessment. Assessment goes into much more detail and looks in depth at the acquisition of new information. The process of assistive technology assessment applies many strategies, tools, and checklists. There are no formal AT/AAC assessments nor are there assessments that “qualify” a student for AT. Rather, it is a process that gives teams further direction on what device, training, or supports are needed. Assessment consists of scales and rating sheets, interviews, observations, and trials completed by AT team members.
It is essential that a team of people be involved in the AT consideration process whether it results in a trial, consultation, assessment, or no AT devices/services required. Once the IEP team has determined that AT is needed for provision of a free, appropriate, public education (FAPE), it is important that the IEP document reflects the team’s determination in as clear a fashion as possible.
