January 17, 2020
From Principal Reckert
Dear Nederland Elementary Families,
Thank you to those of you who completed the survey about how to invest the $40K board monies. So far we have gotten 40 responses. If you have not responded and would like to give input, please click here. Please see the graphic below for the results so far, with 46.3% for "Increasing opportunities for Outdoor Education (i.e.Calwood)" and 29.3% for "Increased focus on new science standards."
Please see the exciting updates from the PTA below. Ned Shred will be underway in two short weeks! Also, we will be hosting a viewing of this year’s Warren Miller movie at NMSHS on Saturday, February 1st at 1:00 and 4:30.
For the rest of the year, WE NEED VOLUNTEERS! We have things you can do from home at night, during the day, big jobs, little jobs..but we need you to support the PTA which is essential to our school. If you’re even able to donate an hour of your time, we would appreciate it! Please email me or Jess McElvain directly at treasurer@nespta.com. Thank you!
Have a great long weekend,
Laurel

Noteworthy
Dental Aid
Nederland Elementary School is participating in Dental Aid’s dental hygiene outreach program.
The program provides free dental screenings for all students with parent permission, and fluoride varnish, cleanings and dental sealant placement for eligible students. On February 11th and 12th, a dental hygienist will be at Nederland Elementary School to provide these services. Medicaid and CHP+ Insurance will be billed as appropriate. No one else, including families, will be billed. If you wish for your student to participate in the program, free of charge, please complete a consent form (attached) and return it to the main office by Friday, January 31st.
Paper hard copies also went home with students. If you need a new consent form or have questions, please contact Kelly Detzel Hess, the School Health Room Para at kelly.detzelhess@bvsd.org or 720-561-4806.

PTA NEWS
Key Dates/Events
NES PTA meeting: January 11, 2020, at 4:30 pm NES library
NED SHRED:
4th & 5th - Jan 28 (Tuesday) and Jan 31 (Friday)
K & 1st - Jan 29 (Wednesday) and Feb 5 (Wednesday)
2nd & 3rd - Jan 30 (Thursday) and Feb 6 (Thursday)
A Plea
If your student is going to NED SHRED and you haven't turned the FULLY completed forms in, please do as soon as possible. There is a lot of data entry to do for the very small volunteer team and time is running short.
If your student is NOT going to NED SHRED, we will miss them. Just drop a quick note to Scott Rainey (email) or leave it in the PTA mailbox (physical) in the NES main office. That way the volunteers won't have to worry about the forms.
If you can volunteer time, especially on the K/1 and 2/3 days, please consider chaperoning.
Easy ways to support the NES PTA
Do you want to help the NES PTA but don't have much time or money to spare? Please consider making the NES PTA the beneficiary of your routine shopping. The NES PTA benefits from B&F's generosity when you donate your bag credit. Just remember to take your reusable shopping bag.
The NES PTA is part of the King Soopers Community Rewards Program (#KL634). Just set up your account and you are good to go. The NES PTA also benefits from Amazon Smile (listed as Nederland Elementary PTA). At ACE you can round up your purchase amount to support charity (rotating groups)
There are many wonderful charities in our area that would benefit from you selecting them as your beneficiary in any one of these programs. Please take the time to select a charity to benefit from your routine shopping. If that charity is the NES PTA, thank you.
Best regards,
Jess McElvain, NES PTA Treasurer

Upcoming Event: Volunteers Needed
We are beginning the initial phase of planning for our inaugural college and career week at NES for grades preschool through 5th. The theme this year is "Oh, The Places You'll Go!" (May 6th-8th). In order to make this a success, we need parents and community member support. Please fill out the form below by Thursday, January 30th if you are interested in volunteering. We can use all the help we can get!
Questions or Concerns? Please contact Kristen at Kristen.Kron@bvsd.org or (720) 561-4825.

Social Emotional Learning at NES
Social-Emotional Learning at NES (Jan 13-17, 2020)
Students continue to practice asserting themselves by using I-messages when they're upset. This week, students also practiced asserting themselves by initiating conversations with new friends. While some children forcefully interact with their peers ~ missing key social cues ~ others passively wait to be noticed and included. The pain of peer rejection is a real concern for some students.
All humans seek meaningful connection and validation from others. So primary grades learned the steps for joining-in group play and visualized how they could invite, help out, encourage and share with peers after reading We Don't Eat Our Classmates. Upper grades confidently approached their classmates for interviews to find commonalities that could be further developed. They mindfully observed the body language of their peers to determine when would be an appropriate time to engage with others.
