The Lumberjack Edge
Cedar Mill Elementary School
January 5, 2018
Welcome back and Happy New Year! I hope that all were able to enjoy the time to relax and participate in some memorable activities with family and friends. A warm welcome to any families who are new to Cedar Mill. We look forward to getting to know all of you better and glad you are a part of our community.
This month's character development focus is responsibility: taking ownership of my thoughts, words, and actions. January is a great time to re-establish routines and responsibilities, as well as a time to set new goals and take on new challenges. As staff talk with students this month about demonstrating responsibility, below are some goals that students may set for themselves.
- I will know what is expected.
- I will keep my commitments.
- I will do my best.
- I will not make excuses.
- I will work to correct my mistakes.
As always, thank you for all that you continue to do in supporting Cedar Mill students and staff. On behalf of the entire Cedar Mill staff, we wish you a happy, healthy, and outstanding new year….2018!

Read for Goats Winter Reading Challenge Ends January 19th
There is still time for students to participate in the Read for Goats Winter Reading Challenge! If kids in the local area read 6,000 hours over winter break, a donor has pledged to donate a pair of goats through Mercy Corp for a family in need to help them improve their lives. Mercy Corps helps people in some of the poorest, most difficult parts of the world.
Participation is voluntary but encouraged. Students may pick up and return recording sheets for participation at the Cedar Mill Community Library or at school. A fact sheet and the reading tracker are also attached at the bottom of this newsletter. The reading challenge ends January 19.
All reading counts: independent reading, family reading and listening to reading. Happy Reading!
Start the Day Right!
Start the Day Right!
Make giving your kids a healthy breakfast every day one of your New Year’s resolutions.
If you’re short on time in the morning or your kids aren’t hungry when they wake up, send them to school for breakfast. Healthy food choices are available every morning in the cafeteria for ALL students. We cannot wait to see them there!
Help your kids to make this semester a success - encourage them to eat breakfast!
2018-19 School Calendar
Please note the 2018-19 school year begins on August 27, 2018. In the spring of 2016, the Beaverton School District set a plan to add 9 student contact days over the course of three school years. This allows students to attend more full weeks of school and improves overall continuity for learning.
Calendars for the current school year and the 2018-19 school year can be found by visiting the following link and is available in multiple languages: https://www.beaverton.k12.or.us/dist/Pages/calendar.aspx
Operation: Ace of Hearts Thank You
Thank you so much to those who contributed to the Ace of of Hearts to support Cedar Mill families this December. Your generosity and support is greatly appreciated.
In the Event of Inclement Weather
When the weather gets snowy or icy, school schedules may be affected. The District generally posts the announcement of delayed school opening or school closure by 5:15 a.m. All Portland Metro area media outlets announce the information on TV newscasts and online.
The District makes decisions based on the ability to operate school buses safely; the ability for students and parents to get to school safely, and the ability of employees to get to work safely and on time. The decision that is made will be for the entire District. As always, parents may choose to make different decisions based on their particular location.
The District will notify parents via SchoolMessenger with a Non-School Hours Emergency message. Please manage your communication preferences in SchoolMessenger InfoCenter.
Inclement weather may impact bus routes to and from school. Visit the following links for information on BSD Snow Route Procedures and Cedar Mill's Snow Routes.
