Emily Carr
March 2016
Message from Adminstration
We hope everyone had a relaxing and safe March Break and extended Easter weekend. The last three months of school are filled with excitement and busy activities. Make sure you keep an eye on the website for updates about the many events that are happening at Emily Carr.
We had a wonderful turn out to the "Kids Have Stress Too!" session on Wednesday evening. If you missed the session, this website is being shared as an excellent resource to help all students build resiliency and handle stress.
Having an accurate tally of students that will be attending Emily Carr in September is also important to our school organizational planning. If you know your child will not be attending Emily Carr in September, please inform the office as soon as possible. We are still accepting registrations for JK as well as SK students new to Emily Carr. If you know someone in our catchment area that has not yet registered their child who is age-appropriate for JK or SK, please let them know that registration is still open and encourage them to come into the office to register as soon as possible. As well, if you know of a family that is moving into our area with school-age students, please let them know that we are currently taking registrations for ALL students for the 2015-2016 school year.
6th Annual World Tour Multicultural Evening
Emily Carr is hosting our 6th Annual World Tour Multicultural Evening on Wednesday, May 11th from 6:30-8:00 pm. Please plan to attend with your family; it is a wonderful evening with country displays, dance and music performances and fun activities for all!
A letter will be sent home in mid-April asking families to participate by hosting a country display. You are welcome to join with other families to do this. It is a wonderful opportunity to get students involved in learning about other cultures or your own culture and heritage. We are always looking for performers so if you know of a group that would be willing to perform a cultural song or dance please let us know.
High school students can earn volunteer hours by helping with or hosting a display or assisting at the event.
Please consider participating and sharing in this wonderful evening with our school. For more information, or if you have questions, please contact Mrs. Hassall at hassalll@hdsb.ca.

On Saturday, April 23rd, join us for our annual Emily Carr Garden Clean Up from 9 am to 12 pm.
Put on your rubber boots, gather up your kids and a rake or shovel… whether digging weeds or digging for worms, it’s a great opportunity to come together as a school community! Together we’ll clean up any winter garbage and tidy up the school gardens. We’ll supply bags, mulch, and something warm to drink! We look forward to seeing you there.
*(A little bit of) Rain or Shine! If the weather isn’t cooperating, look for an update.

Parking Lot
We continue to encourage our students to walk to school as part of a healthy and active lifestyle. Halton Region has a fantastic website that can give families ideas about getting to school. As well, the HDSB's Walk and Wheel website is updated regularly with tips for families to walk to school. Please help us keep our kids safe!
EQAO Dates:
Families were Movin' & Groovin' at EC's Family Night!
Thank you to the many EC families who packed our gym on Wednesday, March 2nd to move and groove while DJ Frances spun fun and lively tunes! Ms. Marino's "Friends & Family Charity Photo Booth" for H20 4 All was a huge success with more than 50 families participating! The Kale Chips were once again a big snack-time hit and eaten to the last crumb! Below is the kale chip recipe so that you can make your own chips at home. Kids can tear and massage the leaves with ease so this can be a shared family snack-making experience. Enjoy! Thanks to all of the wonderful parent and teacher volunteers for another successful Healthy Schools event -- these events would not be possible without you!

The students will be performing on April 20th at our School Play night, on May 11th at the World Tour Evening and then June 1st at Canada’s Wonderland Music Festival. They will finish their year with a performance on June 8th for their families at which time they will play our newly commissioned piece. In April, they will have an opportunity to work with the composer, Vince Gassi. Truly a busy term!
The Grade 7 Band started rehearsing at the end of February. They are a very eager group who are preparing a concert for their families on May 18th. They meet Tuesdays after school.
Our Interlink Choir continues to meet on Mondays as they prepare for their part in our spring play. The date for their performance is Wednesday, April 20th. Many of these students are part of the Blue Jays choir.

Basketball-Update
The girls defeated River Oaks 33-15 in the semi final play-offs.
The finals saw the girls play a home game against the undefeated James W. Hill Jaguars. A thrilling game came right down to the last second but the girls just fell short losing 23-21. What an amazing season. Thanks to all the girls. You did our school proud. Go Thunderbirds!
Our Senior Boys Basketball Team had an exciting and emotional end to their season last night during their Tier 1 final against Captain R. Wilson, losing their game by just 1 point. This group of gentlemen not only improved as individual players, but truly came together as a cohesive team. One of the highlights of the season was watching the boys claw their way back from a 14 point deficit against Abbey Lane to win their semi-final game. A huge thanks to all of the parents who supported our team this season by helping with rides and encouraging words. Mrs. Vickery and Mrs. MacDougall would like to congratulate the boys on all of their hard work, perseverance and dedication this season. The boys were such a pleasure to coach and they have made our school community truly proud.
