The U Scoop

University Middle and High School Academies

Dear UMHSA Families,

Our children have been in school for one month. Now is the perfect time to check in on their well-being and academic progress. How can you gauge this? Well, in addition to asking general questions such as “how was your day?” or “how was lunch?” consider asking more probing questions. For example:

  • How did you help someone today?

  • What made you laugh today?

  • Did anything happen today that concerns you?

  • Tell me something that went well today?

  • Tell me how you handled a difficult situation.

  • What was the hardest thing you did today?

Prioritizing these types of conversations will support our children as they continue to adjust to the daily routine and structure of in-person school. While debriefing about school day experiences supports our scholars as they settle into routines, setting aside time each week to review academic progress in Schoology is equally important.

Returning to in-person school may require scholars to commit more time to study, homework, and after-school activity-life balance. We encourage you to check your scholar’s progress each week and if you have any questions or concerns, reach out to your scholar’s instructors.

Last, I am retiring from Southfield Public Schools effective December 31, 2021. Thank you for allowing me to be a member of your scholar’s educational village. It has been a pleasure to serve the UMHSA community.

In the spirit of service,

Dean Williams
