YRB Surveys To Be Administered - 3/21/19

On Thursday, March 21st, selected classes at SEED DC will participate in the 2019 District of Columbia Youth Risk Behavior Survey conducted by the DC Office of the State Superintendent of Education. This survey is designed to focus on health-risk behaviors, for example, smoking or alcohol and drug use that causes problems during both youth and adulthood. Your scholar’s participation in the survey is very important because he/she represents hundreds of scholars in the city.


Please contact Ms. Pearl, Assistant Head of School, at spearl@seedschooldc.org or at 202-248-3015 if you DO NOT want your scholar to participate in this survey on March 21, 2019, at 9 am.

Mary's Center Continues Its Partnership w/SEED DC

SEED PCS is excited to remind families that it continues to have a partnership with Mary’s Center. The partnership allows for SEED to provide scholars access to pregnancy and sexually transmitted infection (STI) testing, options counseling, family planning education, and case management care coordination services to interconceptional (any woman/female who is of childbearing age) and perinatal (pregnant) women. These services are confidential and are offered to students who attend DCPS schools through the DOH Health Centers at various DCPS high schools.

Monthly Family Coffee - 3/20/19

Wednesday, March 20th, 9-11am

The SEED School

The March Family Coffee will be held next Wednesday, March 20th, from 9-11 a.m.


We will host representatives from BB&T Bank. They will discuss credit repair and budgeting. Also, their mobile bank will be here. Families will be able to establish banking accounts for students. Adult caregivers must be present to set up student bank accounts. Extra credit participation points will be awarded in Math Class for all scholars whose caregivers attend.


Also, we will discuss PARCC Prep and AP Exam Prep for families. We want to equip families with the tools necessary to help reinforce the strategies scholars are learning in school so they will be ready and well prepared for the PARCC Assessment in April and AP Exams in May.

Families of Acceleration Academy scholar participants are strongly encouraged to attend this session.

Extra credit participation points will be awarded in English Class for all scholars whose caregivers attend.


Furthermore, Mrs. Thompson will speak to families regarding the exciting opportunities available to scholars for the summer months. Come learn about how to apply for international travel opportunities, summer camps, etc. Deadlines are approaching fast!

Family Volunteers Needed - SEE NEW ADDITION IN BOLD

Student Life is in need of family volunteers with great organizational skills to assist with organizing the supply closet with dormitory items such as uniforms, toiletries, bedding, and academic supplies.

The available times are Sundays, Mondays, & Fridays for any two hour window, 6-8 p.m.


Volunteers are also need for:

  • Dinner duty support (Mon-Thurs 5:00-7:00 p.m.)
  • School store support (Mon-Thurs 5:00-8:00p.m.)
  • Hallway supervision (Mon-Thurs 4:00-9:00p.m.)
  • Check-in (7-9 p.m.)
  • Check-out (3:30-5:30 p.m.)
  • Cosmetology, hair, & skin care [for 7th & 8th grade girls] (Mondays 4:45-5:30 p.m.)

Hands on Plants Science (HOPS) Summer Program - APP DEADLINE: 4/1/19

The United States Botanic Garden (USBG) has hosted hundreds of urban children and teachers in the National Garden for Hands On Plant Science (HOPS). Participants immerse themselves in the natural world; they dangle over the bridge and learn that clean water is critical for plants and all life forms, they explore the power of the sun and learn how plants make their own food, they watch pollinators in action and have the opportunity to wander and wonder. The National Garden becomes an outdoor classroom where students and teachers use microscopes, dissect flowers, analyze soil and learn how seeds travel.


POSITIONS: We will hire four teachers and eight students (must be at least a rising high school junior) for our two-week program. High school students will receive a $500.00 stipend and teachers will be paid on an hourly basis at $30/hr. Persons will only be considered for hire if they are available for both days of the training and all eight days of the program. Due to the length of this program, there can be no exceptions.


PURPOSE: To facilitate a Hands on Plant Science experience for DC youth between the ages of 7 and 12. This two-week program takes place outside in the National Garden. Program staff will gain plant science teaching skills and knowledge, with a special emphasis on hands-on learning.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Attend two day training on June 27 and 28, 2019. Training is all day from 9:00AM -5:00 PM.
  • Available to work every day of the program: July 1, 2, 3 and 5 and July 8, 9, 10 and 11. Each of these days begins at 8 a.m. and goes to 1:30 p.m.
  • Assist in assembling and physically setting up stations in the National Garden
  • Welcome, assist and interact with participating youth and staff
  • Master and facilitate one of four field stations each day
  • Serve lunch to youth and staff
  • Break down stations and pack out


POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Work well with children
  • Comfortable teaching outdoors and working on your feet for extended periods
  • Flexible and able to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Possess good communication and interpersonal skills

Final offers are contingent upon successful background check.

Unleashed Conference: Defining Your Power, Purpose and Passion

This annual conference is for girls in grades 6-12. This represents the sixth year in Washington, DC and second year in Baltimore, MD. The Washington, DC event is May 4th from 8am - 2pm at Catholic University. Our keynote is Miss Cordelia Cranshaw (Miss DCUSA). The Baltimore, MD event is April 27th from 8am - 2pm at Coppin State University and entrepreneur, chef and owner of Trade Street Jam (recently featured in Essence magazine) will be the keynote.


The conference features the opportunity for high school seniors to compete for book and college trunk scholarships as well. Admission is free with 3 school supplies which will be donated to local schools.

Jr. Mentor Internship w/The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE)

Position Description: Jr. Mentors are a crucial component of the SEEK Program. They assist in classrooms of twenty to thirty students, by reviewing STEM educational material with students in small groups. Jr Mentors will also aid in the implementation of classroom policies and procedures, to help promote a positive learning experience for learners. Jr. Mentors will work closely with Site Leadership aiding the team in an administrative role.


Primary Responsibilities:

  • Enthusiastically and effectively assist in teaching of engineering curriculum to students
  • Reinforce lessons presented by SEEK Mentors by reviewing material with students one-on one or in small groups inside a classroom environment
  • Aid in the implementation of the SEEK programs policies and classroom rules to help promote constructive student behavior
  • Participates in classroom activities and assists with daily curriculum instruction
  • Escalate any issues to Lead Mentor, when appropriate
  • Assists Mentors with recordkeeping, student attendance and grading of assignments
  • Support overall implementation of the SEEK program through additional duties as assigned

Summer Engineering Experience for Kids (SEEK) Program (current 3rd thru 5th graders)

The SEEK Program is designed to be a fun and engaging educational experience, led by NSBE (National Society of Black Engineers) engineering students and technical professionals dedicated to pursuing professional excellence and giving back to the community. The SEEK program utilizes a hands-on design curriculum. Students will work in teams, using their knowledge to solve problems and create products while discovering the underlying math and science principles involved in these processes. Each week, the students will take on a new project, culminating with a presentation, design competition and physical competitions that all parents are encouraged to attend.


This (3) three-week program will be open to students who are current 3rd thru 5th graders. The program will be held at local elementary schools and will include 125 students in each grade level, for a maximum total of 375 students served per program(varies per site). 50 Collegiate mentors will help to facilitate a full-sized program.

This program is a commuter-based program for students, Monday thru Friday, 8:30 am to 3:30 pm.
