2nd Grade

Getting to know the teacher...

Hello! My name is Jennifer Rosales and I am very happy to have your child in my second grade class this year. I'd like to begin by telling you a little bit about myself. I recently graduated from the University of Houston with a degree in Childhood Education. I have over seven years experience working in a preschool, which is where my passion for working with children began. I am very excited to begin teaching and can't wait to start the year with your child!

Monthly News!

Dear Parents,

Welcome to the new school year! Our first week in second grade was a success! The boys and girls have done a great job of adjusting to our daily routine. We have some very exciting units of study this month. We will be exploring communities in Social Studies and will be learning about subtracting three-digit numbers in math. We look forward to an eventful and productive month!

Students will begin learning strategies to subtract two-digit numbers. Our textbook emphasizes that the subtraction process involves repeated calculations. Students will take apart hundreds to subtract. They will practice mentally subtracting 10 or 100 from a three-digit number. They will also subtract three-digit numbers with regrouping.

Social Studies

In Social Studies, we will begin to explore different types of communities such as urban, suburban, and rural communities. The students will compare and contrast the three and describe some reasons people choose to live in those places. We will also study how the climate affects how people live.

Words to know:

  • climate
  • urban area
  • shelter
  • rural area
  • suburb

Field Trip!

We are excited to announce the first field trip of the school year will be next month, September 21st. We will be visiting the Houston Museum of Natural Science and explore how animals migrate and adapt to their surroundings. Students will have the opportunity to see a wide variety of arthropods in their natural environment by having access to the Cockrell Butterfly Center. Cost per student will be $9.50. A link is provided below with museum information. A letter with complete details will be sent out within the next couple of weeks!
