HEMLOCK MIDDLE SCHOOL
May 15th - May 21st
Weekly Update from our Superintendent
This week is our 34th week for the 2020-2021 school year.
I appreciate everyone's help in celebrating our teachers this week. Many of you shared kind words and notes and let our team members know how special they are to your child(ren) and family.
We continue to work toward providing our students with the best school experience possible. We have seen a trend of increased COVID 19 cases and related quarantines among our high school student population.
Our current numbers of COVID-19 positive cases at our high school are the highest we have seen all school year long, and we find the need to pause face-to-face instruction for our high school students grades 9-12 starting Friday, May 7th through Wednesday, May 12th. We may extend remote learning beyond next Wednesday but want to pause to review and reflect and make sure we do everything possible to protect our face-to-face instruction for the remainder of the year.
With this in mind, I need to continue to urge parents to keep sick children home; this helps protect our face-to-face instruction and services from disruption.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to let me know.
All the best,
Don Killingbeck, Supt.

WHAT'S GOING ON AROUND TOWN ........
FREE BREAKFAST AND LUNCH TO ALL STUDENTS FOR 2020-2021 SCHOOL YEAR
May 16th is Armed Forces Day. This day honors those who serve in all branches of the United State military. Thank those in service often, but especially on this day.
May’s full Moon, the Flower Moon, occurs on Wednesday, May 26. It reaches peak illumination at 7:14 am. (EDT) that morning, so for the best view of this full Moon, step outside on the night of Tuesday the 25th and look for that big, bright, shining lunar disk! It will be a supermoon and will coincide with a total lunar eclipse (visible in some parts of North America)!
May 26 was a day full of terrifying Twisters...
On this day in 1917, tornadoes struck central Illinois, killing 101 people. Originally thought to be just one tornado that wreaked havoc along a 293-mile-long path, the outbreak was later determined to be four to eight tornadoes. One of them lasted 4 hours and followed a track 155 miles long (including the distance traveled while in the air). Mattoon and Charleston were especially hard hit by an F4 tornado (original Fujita scale). In Mattoon, almost 500 houses were destroyed.
According to newspaper reports, straw was driven ½ inch deep into a tree, a flagpole with flag was blown four blocks and planted upright in the ground, books and other items were carried 50 to 70 miles away. Whew! Thank goodness Michigan doesn't have these too often.
