Cybercat Robotics
A new robotics season, and another successful start for Summit School Cybercat Robotics. Seven of our 9 teams attended a tournament in Laveen last weekend.
Our two middle school teams placed 1st and 2nd. The team of Wade and Sydney placed 1st with a score of 175, while the team of Vincent, Ryan, and Bradley took 2nd with 116. In the individual skills the same team of Vincent, Ryan, and Bradley took 3rd place in skills including autonomous coding with a score of 131.
Other mentions:. The elementary team of Camille, Lucy, and Doris made the cut for the finals and placed 5th (highest score of 82).
Proud of all our teams today! This is a tough challenge this year.
Life Skills
PreK Pumpkin Adventures
This month, the Summit Preschool PreK Tornadoes Class has been learning all about pumpkins! We started our exploration by learning about the outside of pumpkins, labeling the parts of a pumpkin, and the life cycle. Last week, we continued our exploration by opening up the pumpkin. After feeling the insides, the students made observational drawings of the seeds and pulp! Next, we talked about what would happen if we put a pumpkin in water. A lot of the students thought it might grow (absorb the water), make a new pumpkin, or sink. All the students got to hold the big pumpkin and feel how heavy it was! Once we put it in water, the students were shocked to discover that it actually floats! After some questioning, the students came to the conclusion that there is air inside the pumpkin. We finished our pumpkin learning by conducting a pumpkin slime experiment (inside a real pumpkin – seeds and all!) and by tasting some pumpkin foods. The students filled out a survey by indicating which foods they liked or disliked. We’ve had such a fun time learning together!
Sabrecat Cross Country
The girls' team took first place in the meet last weekend, and Tyler took first place in the boys' race.

Talent Show Time!
The Stars of Summit Talent Show is back! We are looking for talents of all kinds – singers, dancers, musicians, jugglers, magicians, gymnasts, comedians, scientists, actors, you name it. We’d love to see the variety of talent that Summit students have, so please be creative!
This year’s talent show is open to all who would like to participate. There will be no auditions, but you are required to perform your act at one of the final rehearsals. Please be prepared! If your act is not ready by the final rehearsal, you will not be allowed to perform in the show. The Talent Show will be held on Wednesday, November 2 at 5:30 pm. The final rehearsals will take place on Tuesday, October 25 and Wednesday, October 26 at 3:30 pm in the MPR.
Forms were sent home with every student. If your student is interested in performing, please fill out the form and return it to Ms. Vosseller by October 14. If you have any questions, please email her at erin.vosseller@summitschoolaz.org. We know that Summit students and staff are some of the most talented people around!
October is National Bullying Prevention Month
What is Bullying?
The United States Department of Justice defines bullying as follows, “bullying encompasses a variety of negative acts repeated over time that involve a real or perceived imbalance of power, with the more powerful child or group attacking those who are less powerful. Bullying can be physical (e.g., spitting, pushing, stealing, hitting, and kicking), verbal (e.g., name calling, teasing, taunting, and making threats) and psychological (e.g., social exclusion, extortion, intimidation, spreading rumors, and manipulating social relationships.)”
Bullying in any form is completely unacceptable at Summit and will be addressed immediately and fully.
- Emotional– being unfriendly, excluding, tormenting (e.g., hiding books, threatening gestures)
- Physical– pushing, kicking, hitting, punching or any use of violence
- Racist– racial taunts, graffiti, gestures
- Sexual– unwanted physical contact or sexually inappropriate comments• Homophobic– due to, or focusing on the issue of sexuality
- Verbal– name-calling, sarcasm, spreading rumors, teasing
- Cyber– all areas of internet, such as email, social media, and online communication. This includes all verbal and written communication, such as text messages or apps, using a mobile device.
Comments or actions referred to as joking, kidding, or playing around will not be an excusable reason for the bullying actions.
What is not bullying?
There are also some behaviors, although they might be unpleasant or distressing, are not bullying:
- Mutual conflict that involves a disagreement, but not an imbalance of power.
- Unresolved mutual conflict can develop into bullying if one of the parties targets the other repeatedly in retaliation.
- Single episode acts of nastiness or physical aggression, or aggression directed towards many different people, is not bullying.
- Social rejection or dislike is not bullying unless it involves deliberate and repeated attempts to cause distress, exclude or create dislike by others.
Steps to Follow If You Suspect That Your Child is Being Bullied
- Talk to your child and try to find out what the problem is.
- Contact the school immediately and request an appointment with your child’s homeroom teacher.
- Remember, there are always two sides to any problem, and we must look at all problems from all sides.
- We will discuss the problem with you and design a plan of action to suit the situation. We will work together to make students aware that bullying is not tolerated.
School Procedures for Bullying Concerns
- All reports of bullying will be promptly and fully investigated.
- Students found to engage in bullying behaviors will be held accountable, with appropriate guardian
- Consultation and disciplinary consequences up to and including suspension and disenrollment from Summit.
- Police will be consulted in cases of extreme bullying and/or violence.

Referral Credits and IBE
Yes, we are still offering a $1,000.00 referral tuition credit for each new student (non-sibling of current student) who is referred to Summit for the 2022-23 school year. The credit will be applied to your FACTS account after 2 months. We greatly appreciate your referrals!
Also, if you or someone you know owns or is a decision-maker in an LLC or S-Corp, there are some new, beneficial tax changes (See message below from IBE).
Corporate Donation season is here and there have been some HUGE things happening at IBE. As you may have heard, our very generous S-Corporations could potentially receive a deduction on their Federal tax forms in addition to the State dollar-for-dollar tax credit.
