I ❤️ Public Health Month

Today marks the beginning of I Love Public Health Month! #Publichealth is essential for improving and promoting the health of individuals, communities, and populations around the world. This year in particular has been a testament to the importance of investing in public health. We have seen how public health is beneficial for so many aspects of our everyday lives, and we want to express our appreciation for all of those who work to ensure the success of public health efforts. We will continue to elevate public health and support its endeavors and we hope to move into the years ahead with the same momentum gathered for prioritizing public health throughout 2020. Every day we recognize all that public health does for our well-being, but we will be giving special attention to public health's incredible accomplishments throughout the month of February. Comment below and share with us why you public health. #ThisIsPublicHealth

Dr. Mark Ebell (Epid & Biostat) Survey Request

I am the US lead investigator for a multinational project sponsored by the University of Geneva and Southampton University. We’re hoping to recruit members of the public (including folks like you! You count!) to take part in a large-scale survey on the preventive behaviors people are taking to avoid catching COVID-19, treatments, and the long-term effect of those that have suffered from COVID-19 during the pandemic. The study has been approved by the UGA IRB. It is open to all, whether or not you have been diagnosed with COVID-19.

To participate please click on this link: The site lists the collaborating universities, and you can just click on the box that says “United States of America” to complete the brief informed consent and get the US version of the survey. It takes 15 to 20 minutes on average to complete. Our goal is to get at least 3000 US participants, and at least 20,000 worldwide in order to do our analyses.

To make our findings as meaningful as possible, we are hoping to get a broad range of participants from across the US and around the world. Please share information about this study and the link on social media. The main thing is to let folks know that we are interested in a broad range of participants with and without a diagnosis of COVID-19, and to provide the link.

Location: Live-Streamed on the Graduate School’s YouTube Channel

Each year, an invited speaker delivers a lecture that honors the quiet determination and dignity with which Mary Frances Early pursued her efforts to ensure that the state’s flagship university became an institution of higher learning for all the people of Georgia. The annual lecture demonstrates the progress that has been made while also recognizing that work still remains in order to fully realize Ms. Early’s vision. With pride, we salute Ms. Early for all that she has accomplished and for the excellence, integrity, fortitude, and grace that she represents.

DAWGS Research: A pilot program for reducing waste in our research laboratories

UGA Campus Sustainability Grant: Diversion of Academic Wastes for Green and Sustainable Research (DAWGS Research)

This week’s guest speakers: Megan Lott, Ph.D. student, and Amelia Foley, undergraduate student, Department of Environmental Health Science, College of Public Health, University of Georgia; and Star Scott, Green Lab Program Coordinator, University of Georgia

The seminar will take place on Friday, February 5, 2020 at 11:30 a.m. online via Zoom. Zoom Meeting ID: 941 5555 0151 Passcode: EHSC8030

About: Mounting evidence suggests that research laboratories contribute significantly to the global plastic waste burden, with research contributing an estimated 5.5 million tons, annually. To improve the management of plastic wastes from our research laboratories, the Department of Environmental Health has received a UGA Campus Sustainability Grant for the following project: Diversion of Academic Wastes for Green and Sustainable Research (DAWGS Research). DAWGS Research aims to implement a pilot-scale lab recycling program for the Department of Environmental Health. This program will be specifically dedicated to the diversion of research consumables from waste streams during the spring of 2021. Program results will help estimate the impact and determine the feasibility of an institutional-wide research recycling program.
Please join this week’s seminar to learn more about the pilot program. An overview of the pilot program will be provided by EHS Students Megan Lott and Amelia Foley. Proper protocols for lab recycling safety will be detailed by Star Scott, the Green Labs Program Coordinator. Join in for a conversation about waste reduction in our research programs and an opportunity to enroll in this lab recycling pilot program!
