WE ARE STRONGER TOGETHER
Dear Kenilworth Families,
As educators and members of our community, we stand in solidarity against all racism, hate, discriminatory acts, and acknowledge the profound and systemic racial injustices that exist in our country. In addition to all we are going through with Covid-19, recent tragic events including the wrongful deaths of Black men and women, including Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and George Floyd weigh heavily on all of our hearts. In these painful times, we must work for solidarity, compassion, unity, and peace.
Racial injustice is not limited to other parts of the country. In our own community of Petaluma, we’ve had parents and students tell us they do not feel welcomed because of their skin color. Recent events emphasize the importance of learning more about our community and surrounding communities, as well as the long history of bias and racism in our country. This work we all must do to acknowledge and fight racism is challenging and necessary. There are many ways to help and participate, including talking with your family and friends about what is happening. If we were in classrooms, we would be having these conversations.
We believe in the power of education. We must continue educating ourselves, our children, and each other, no matter how uncomfortable and difficult it may be. We must continue listening to, learning from, and teaching our young people and ourselves so we are all informed.
Finally, we look forward to broadening and deepening our partnerships with all students, parents, staff, and community members to develop and implement a comprehensive plan to address racism, bias, inequity, and unequal opportunity in our schools and beyond. We are deeply committed to doing what we must to build a better tomorrow. You are all in our hearts and in our thoughts. We are stronger together.
