Classroom News!
- This week we read a book called "Signs" by Tana Hoban. We figured out that all of the signs in the book could be put into three categories -- signs that tell us to DO something, signs that tell us NOT to do something and labels. We took a walk through our school building and decided that more signage could be helpful. We got right to work using our sounding-out skills to write our own signs. Next time you are visiting school it will be much easier for you to know which way is "UP", that you should remember to "HOLD RAILING" when you walk downstairs and , if you look very hard you will even find the best place in the building to "SING!"
- We learned a bit about Martin Luther King. We had some great discussions about how much he cared about people being kind and fair to each other. We saw pictures of all the people in Washington to see an important speech he made. We noticed that they were holding signs! We added a fourth category to the sorts of signs there are -- signs that say something we believe! Next week we will have a small Kindergarten parade in honor of Dr. King and we will proudly carry our signs which say such things as "BE NICE" "Be FAIR" and "NEVER GET IN A FIGHT".
- We've begun to learn about tally marks. We have a special way we use our voices when we count. This helps us remember that we make a horizontal line the count of 5 to make a "bundle."

Bear
Bear, bear, bear, bear!
How many kinds of bears are there?
Polar bear and Grizzly bear,
Big brown bear with lots of hair!
Spectacled bear, Black bear too.
Sloth bear, Sun bear, quite a few!
Bear, bear, bear, bear!
So many bears to compare!
