The Buzz
What's Happening in Our Hive
This newsletter is intended to let families know what third graders are working on in class and how third grade classrooms are participating in school-wide events. Please make sure you are still checking your student's red folder every night for important communications from the PTO, school administration, or central office.
This Week in Third Grade
Mathematics- Third-grade students are finishing the unit on geometry and measurement called Perimeter, Area, and Polygons. Students will be completing review activities and unit tests this week. Next up, we return to multiplication and division.
Science- Classes in third grade have concluded, or will be concluding shortly, the unit on Force and Motion. We so enjoyed the visit from Brickz 4 Kids to help us investigate this content area.
Social Justice Parent Workshops
Next Thursday, March 1 our third Parent and Caregiver Workshop on the topic of Understanding and Addressing Microaggressions. This session will help participants understand how to avoid committing microaggressions, how to respond when they happen to you, and how to be an ally when you see them happening to others.
The remaining workshops in the series are:
- Discussion Panel on Talking With Your Kids About Race on Thursday, March 8
The workshops are free of charge and open to the community so bring a friend! Childcare is available to Claxton families and will be provided by some of our awesome teachers. Light refreshments will also be provided. While registration is not required, it is encouraged for an accurate headcount. Please see the flyer below or check out the CLX Social Justice League website for more information.

Flu Information
From the school nurse, Amy Alday:
Many flu cases have been reported in our community. Unfortunately, the flu vaccine has only an estimated 10% efficacy this year. So, just a reminder that the best way to protect yourself and your classroom is to encourage good hand washing. Also, wiping down desks and heavily used areas on a daily basis will help kill germs.
Below are some helpful hand washing tips that you can practice at home, school, and work.
Helpful Hand Washing Tips:
- Get your hands wet first, then apply soap
- Wash hands for at least 20 seconds (sing ABCs, Happy Birthday, etc..)
- Wash all areas of hands (between fingers, backs of hands, wrists)
- Turn the water off with a paper towel
- Make sure to dry hands thoroughly (wet hands pick up 10x more germs)
We appreciate you helping to keep our classrooms healthy and safe!
