Call for Community Council Candidates
Serving on the School Community Council
Serving on our SCC is a wonderful way for parents and teachers to contribute and help improve academic performance at our school. Reading Elementary receives an annual dividend from the school trust lands. Our council helps decide how these funds will be used. This year our school received $61,676 from the School LAND Trust Program, and most of that was earmarked for the salaries to pay our team of teacher assistants throughout the school. Each year the SCC council reviews and prepares other academic plans which are then given final approval by Davis School Board. Councils also act in an advisory capacity to school and school district administrations.
Current School Community Council Membership
We would like to sincerely thank Kimi Bateman. She has served on SCC for two years and her term is now over. The four parent members continuing for one more school year include Cole Smith, Sarah Fawcett, Val McQuiston and Brooke Holman. They are joined by two employee members - Scott Hughes and Karen Mendenhall. One additional employee member will be added to the council this year.
Qualifications
Every public school in Utah has a School Community Council made up of school employees (elected by fellow employees) and parents (elected by the parents of students attending the school). Membership terms are for two years and elections are held at the beginning of each school year. For the 2020-21 school year, one additional parent member is needed for SCC. This new member must have a student attending Reading during at least one of the two years of their term of service which would continue through the end of the 2021-22 school year. Additional SCC questions can be answered at:
https://schools.utah.gov/schoollandtrust/parentscouncils
If you are interested in having your name added to the SCC ballot, please fill out the form and return it to the school office no later than September 17 at 4pm. If no candidate names are received, the current parent SCC members will recruit one additional parent to serve. If only one candidate comes forward, no election will need to be held. If two or more candidates are interested, an election will be held electronically through the Guardian myDSD system between September 21st and September 28th, 2020.
