Hispanic Heritage Month Spotlight
Maria Hinojosa
Nothing can stop this award-winning journalist, who was born in Mexico City. Your kid might recognize her from platforms like CNN, NPR, PBS, CBS, and WNBC. Through her community-based multimedia work, she strives to "give a voice to the diverse American experience," which she feels has often been overlooked by traditional media. During her 30-year career, Hinojosa has been the host and executive producer of the Peabody Award-winning show Latino USA on National Public Radio; the founder, president, and CEO of Futuro Media Group; anchor of a talk show called Maria Hinojosa: One-on-One; and more. She's also won numerous awards, including the 2012 John Chancellor Award for Excellence in Journalism, the National Association of Hispanic Journalists' Radio Award, and four Emmys.
Lionel Messi
Lionel Messi is a football player from Argentina who plays for FC Barcelona. He has won the Ballon D'Or, the annual award given to the best player in the world, 7 times, 2022 FIFA World Cup winner and an Olympic gold medal winner in 2008. He was born in 1987 in Rosario, Argentina's third-biggest city.
Evelyn Cisneros
Evelyn Cisneros made history for being the first Latina prima ballerina in the U.S. The Mexican American has played Princess Aurora in Sleeping Beauty, The Sugar Plum Fairy in The Nutcracker, Odette/Odile in Swan Lake, and countless other roles. Cisneros is an especially good role model for kids because "there's not a lot of Latinas in ballet, and they're 'hidden figures,' so to speak," says Reynoso.
Exciting Author and Illustrator Visit
Thanks to a partnership with Read’s and Company, author and illustrator team Jonathan Stutzman and Heather Fox will be visiting students in grades 1-3 on Monday, October 16th. We are very excited to provide our students with this opportunity to learn more about the job of an author and illustrator and have an insider look at the writing/drawing process. See the Book Order Form if you would like to purchase their books prior to the visit.

Factoring in Fourth Grade
Fourth graders in Mrs. Derban's class worked at vertical whiteboards learning about factors. To reinforce their factoring skills, they were playing Freeze Factors.
Second Step
Students started Unit 1 on Friday September 15, Growth Mindset and Goal Setting. During this unit your child(ren) will be working on developing a growth mindset, using helpful thoughts to persevere through challenges, applying strategies and making an effective plan for how to get better at a skill, and planning, modifying, and achieving goals. Lesson 4 will be delivered on Thursday, October 12. See below for details!
Click the Grade Level Below!
This week, chat with your child(ren) about: Lesson 4
- Grade 2: We Can Change Our Thoughts: In this week’s lesson, your child will learn how to replace an unhelpful thought with a helpful thought so they can keep going when learning feels hard. Try This at Home : Ask your child how they might change an unhelpful thought into a helpful thought. Encourage them by using helpful thoughts at home.
- Grade 3: Planning for Practice: In this week’s lesson, your child will work with a partner to make a practice plan that includes what they want to learn, how they will practice, and what they can do if they aren’t improving. Try This at Home : Ask your child to tell you what a practice plan include.
- Grade 4: Reflecting On Our Journey: In this week’s lesson, your child’s class will reflect on their journey of working toward their 2-week goal. Try This at Home : Ask your child about their experience with setting a class goal and working toward it. What worked? What didn’t work? What could they do next time? Reflect on a goal you’ve worked toward and what you learned.
- Grade 5: Time to Reflect: In this week’s lesson, your child will learn how to reflect on their experience working toward a goal. Try This at Home : Ask your child to tell you about their goal-setting journey, including what worked, what didn’t work, and what they could do next time. Tell your child about a goal that you set and worked toward. What worked, what didn’t work, and what did you learn?

Birthday/Holiday Treats
Due to the many students with allergies and food reactions food items to celebrate student birthdays are not permitted. We are requesting that all birthday recognitions be non-food based. We do want to acknowledge student birthdays but encourage families to do so in other ways. For example, small items such as pencils or stickers for classmates or the donation of a book to the school or classroom library in honor of a child’s birthday would be appropriate. Thank you for honoring and respecting this request.
Holiday celebrations will be held in compliance with School Board Policy #246 Student Wellness. The policy states “The district recognizes that classroom parties and celebrations are a tradition at school. School staff and parents/guardians are encouraged to include healthy food offerings, as defined in this policy, at school parties and events to support a healthy environment throughout the district.” Policy 246 can be viewed in its entirety by visiting the district’s website.
Holiday celebrations and end-of-year classroom celebrations will be announced in advance for parents to be prepared in determining food choices with their children. Birthday celebrations are held randomly and do not allow for parent awareness prior to the event in the school setting, which contributed to the decision for birthday recognitions to be non-food based.
