Down Syndrome
(Trisomy 21)
Why i chose this disease ?
I chose the disorder of down syndrome because i feel sympathy and sorrow for the people and children around the world diagnosed with this very sad disorder. People with down syndrome learn how to walk and talk later than most others, learning is a hard task as well as behavior. Down syndrome also affects every single part of the body; a chromosome defect is present in every cell. Its cause by a error in a cell division called nondisjunction, which leaves a sperm or egg cell with an extra copy of chromosome 21 before or at conception.
definition of down syndrome
A congenital disorder arising from a chromosome defect, causing intellectual impairment and physical abnormalities, usually arises from a defect including chromosome 21.
symptoms
Many of the symptoms of down syndrome are based on the appearance of the person with the disease but down syndrome also allows the human body to work and grow slower than most other people. They also tend to talk, learn, and understand things a lot slower and harder than people.
- flat facial features
- small head and ears
- short neck
- bulging tongue
- eyes that slant upward
- oddly shaped ears
- poor muscle tone
How is this disorder inherited?
Most cases are not inherited. The chromosomal abnormality occurs as a random event during the formation of reproductive cells in a parent. It is not sex linked it is caused by a mistake in cell division usually with chromosome 21 (Trisomy 21). Because it has created three copies of chromosome 21 it would be considered neither recessive nor dominant.
how is it treated?
There is no standard treatment for down syndrome, treatments are based on each individual physical and intellectual needs. A person with down syndrome have a care team including a physician, special educator, speech therapist, occupation therapist, physical therapist, and social workers.
how is it diagnosed?
Screening test, such as an ultrasound or a blood test is needed to make sure the person really has down syndrome . But these test sometimes give false-positive or false-negative results diagnostic test such as chorionic villus sampling or amniocentesis. most of the time someone can notice a person with down syndrome by there appearance.
what people and how many people are diagnosed with down syndrome?
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 6,000 babies are born in the United States each year with Down syndrome; 1 out of every 691 babes have down syndrome. Currently, more than 400,000 people are living with Down syndrome in the United States, according to the National Down Syndrome Society. Any person born could be diagnosed with down syndrome, there is a case of down syndrome in every ethnic group.
application
During my research i have discovered many new things about the interesting disease of down syndrome. I learned that is caused by an affected chromosome, not inherited. I also realized by watching videos and reading articles ,even though the life of a human diagnosed with down syndrome may be hard its a experience most people have never realized and to make the most of your life with this disease is a great accomplishment. Besides, in gods eyes were all the same anyways.
