Pawsome News
September 20, 2019
Dear Pawsome Loring Families,
Sara Harvey, Principal
David Gaita, Assistant Principal
Expectation Stations
Throughout the year, students will be receiving PAWS from any Loring staff member for demonstrating our Core Values during the day. Students can earn both individual paws and class paws. Please continue to talk with your child about our Core Values and the different ways they can demonstrate expected behaviors and the Core Values throughout the day.
Community Celebration
Community Celebration takes place at 2:40 p.m. on various full-day Wednesdays throughout the year. The dates are listed below. All members of our Loring Community are welcome to attend Community Celebration.
If you are planning to attend, please pay close attention to a few things:
- If you plan to dismiss your child(ren) from Community Celebration, please send in a note that morning so the office and teachers can be prepared. Last minute dismissal changes after Community Celebration make school dismissal very tricky for everyone.
- Please do not park in the Car Pickup line for Community Celebration, doing this is unsafe and holds up our whole student dismissal. Since parking is limited, please plan to walk or carpool if possible.
- The first row of chairs on each side of the lunchroom are reserved for staff. Staff members need to be in close proximity of the students during Community Celebration.
- Please be mindful of talking while in the audience. All adults should be modeling respectful audience behavior for our students.
Community Celebration Dates:
- October 2 and 23
- November 6 **THIS DATE WAS LEFT OFF THE LAST NEWSLETTER**
- December 11
- January 15 and 29
- February 12
- March 18
- April 1 and 29
- May 13 and 27
- June 3
On Community Celebration days, students and staff are encouraged to show our Pawsome Loring School spirit by wearing school colors (maroon and gray), school apparel (can be purchased on the PTO website), leopard and/or paw prints! We love to look PAWSOME!
Community Celebration FAQs
Singers
If you are singing a song with recorded music, you must sing with live accompaniment or a karaoke version of the song. All songs/acts must be memorized.
Dancers
If you are dancing, your dance must be choreographed.
When can I sign up for an audition?
You can sign up for an audition after your music class, during recess or lunch. Please make sure it’s okay with your classroom teacher first.
How many times can I perform?
Students who have performed in 1 Community Celebration and pass a second audition, will be put on a waiting list so that students who have not had the opportunity to perform can be given a chance.
What if I want to change my number or perform something different?
Students must perform their community celebration act exactly as it was performed for their audition. If you want to change something, you must re-audition at least 2 weeks prior to your performance date.
Can I sing or dance to a pop song?
All performances for Loring School Community Celebration should be appropriate for a K-5 school and uphold or advance our core values of respect, responsibility, best effort and caring. Mrs. Gillin, as coordinator for this event, will screen acts for suitability and will make the final decision as to the appropriateness of the act.
Can my cat come to my audition?
In order to maintain the integrity of the audition process, auditions are closed to parents, guardians, relatives, friends, and pets. Thank you.
For more information or if you have more questions, please contact Mrs. Gillin.
School Council Election
Attendance Matters!
In Massachusetts, Chronic Absenteeism is defined as the percentage of students missing 10 percent or more of their days in membership. In a typical 180-day school year, this is the percentage of students who miss 18 or more days. The chronic absenteeism rate includes both excused and unexcused absences.
Children who regularly attend school are more engaged, connected and achieve at higher levels. Please make every effort to get your child to school regularly.
If your child is going to be out of school, please make sure to call our absence line at 978-578-0870 and press 1 to report the absence giving a specific reason such as, "My child has a fever" or send in a note for an upcoming absence "My child will be out of town at a family wedding." While an email to the teacher is always welcome, it should not be the primary way to report your child's absence.
Each student absence or tardy will be coded as excused or unexcused.
An excused absence includes:
Documented illness or injury
Bereavement/family funeral
Major religious observances
Extraordinary family circumstances
An unexcused absence includes, but is not limited to:
Chronic absences or tardies without medical documentation
Truancy
Non-emergency family situations
Family vacations
Attendance letters will be sent home for students that have 5 unexcused absences and meetings will be requested for students that have 10+ absences from school. Our hope is to work together with families to ensure that all of our students are in school regularly.
Back-to-School Packet
Please reach out to the front office if you have any questions.
