*Week of October 23rd is the Book Fair. We will preview the Book Fair on the 24th and students will be able to shop on the 24th!

*November 21st: End of 1st Trimester

Weekly Learning Targets
Reading:
We are continuing to establish reading workshop habits and routines. On a daily/weekly basis, students get focused lessons on good reading habits, fluency and comprehension, shared reading, book of the day read alouds, conferencing, a variety of reading skills and strategies, the tools in the classroom to help them, choice reading, content area reading, goal setting, booktalks and book trailers, and author and genre discussions and reflections. As the year progresses, students will be building a reading portfolio on SeeSaw as well as creating Greenscreen and Stop Motion videos on their favorite books in hopes to persuade other readers to read that book. I will continue to communicate our learning targets each week.
This Week's Reading Learning Targets...
-I can pick a just fit book that's just right for me using the IPICK Strategy.
-I can practice good reading habits by rereading to check my comprehension.
-I can demonstrate my comprehension through writing which includes providing evidence from the text to support my thinking. (summarizing-reflecting and discuss-evidence)
-I can track my character's names to better understand what I read.
-I can track Who? What? Where? to better understand what I read.
-I can read and match my character's voice, body, and emotions.
-I can recognize or notice "strong vocabulary words" while I read my "choice books."
-I can practice my accuracy, expression, smoothness, and pace of reading to become a more fluent reader.
-And many routines and procedures practiced
Math Learning Targets: (unit: place value, addition, and subtraction)
-I can use different mental math strategies to better my fact fluency.
-I can use place value and decomposing to add two and three digit numbers fluently.
-I can find the sum of two and three and digit numbers using a strategy.
-And many routines and procedures practiced
Writing Learning Targets: (unit: personal narrative)
-I can gather personal stories using a variety of brainstorming strategies.
-I can identify characteristics of a personal narrative.
-I can notice different "writer's craft" in our mentor sentence from Fireflies and Yard Sale.
-I can use "timeline events" and "emotion" words to brainstorm ideas to write about.
Science Learning Targets: (unit: forces and motion)
-I can explain what a force is.
-I can see forces around me and how they help things move.
-I can explain which type of force puts things in motion.
-I can explain the difference between a balanced for and an unbalanced force.
-I can use my knowledge of forces to build a bridge that withstands the weight of pennies (as many pennies as possible).
Students will not have science and social studies unit tests throughout the year nor will they have homework in those areas. Math is the only subject where students will have some homework but never on a weekly basis. At the end of a math unit, students will have a study guide to complete at home prior to the unit test. Writing pieces are not sent home until the end of the unit. Our first piece, the narrative, takes most if not all of the first trimester. Students will post work on SeeSaw often. My hope is that SeeSaw will help keep you informed on what your child is doing in school on a regular basis in the classroom.
***Social Studies content standards are mostly covered in the third trimester.
