The Second Grade Scoop
April 21st, 2017
Dear 2R Families,
We have had a fun first week back from Spring break. We have new seats and new groups for Math and Reading centers. Keep an eye on your email next week for some important information about field trips and more!
I hope to see you all at the Tatem Fair this weekend! I will be working in the Tatem Salon from 1:00-2:00pm and I'd love visitors! Girls can get their hair done in braids or add glittery hairspray. There are also temporary tattoos and a "facial hair station" for the boys!

Math
In Unit 8, students have been learning all about 2D and 3D shapes. The students learned to classify shapes by their attributes, such as their number of sides, angles, vertices (corners/points), parallel lines and right angles. Please be sure to read the Family Letter in the HomeLinks book for more information on the vocabulary we are learning.
This week, to help us practice using the vocabulary we have been playing a lot of Headbands: Shape Editions. This game is played in partners. One partner puts a picture of a shape on their head without looking. The other partner gives clues about the shape, such as the amount of sides, the shape of the faces, etc.
At home, please continue to...
- Practice basic addition and subtraction math facts.
- Continue to encourage students to explain their thinking aloud or on paper.
- Talk about shapes you see in everyday life. Discuss their amount of sides, angles, vertices, etc.
- Include your child in any measuring or estimating done in everyday life.
- Check out Number Grid Difference, Shape Capture and Basketball Addition games on the Everyday Math website. Please email me if you need your student's login.
Reader's Workshop
At home, please continue to...
- Encourage your child to read at least 15 minutes each night.
- Ask your child to read aloud to you to improve fluency and work on expression.
- Ask your child questions about the story (see below.)

Social Studies
Our Flat Haddy project is a perfect way to start a discussion about the important spots in Haddonfield. I can't wait to see where everyone's Flat Haddies have gone! The photo of Flat Haddy and the worksheet is due back to school on Monday, April 24th.

Order Due Date - Saturday, April 29th
Thank you to everyone who participated in the March purchase. Because of your orders, we earned 10 free books for our classroom and a class set of book coupons, which will be sent home with the next catalogue. I will send home the April catalogue on Monday.
Please take a few moments to explore the April selection next week together and let your child help choose books he or she is excited to read. For a wide selection of quality children's books that are just right for your child's reading level, please order online at scholastic.com/readingclub.
If our class places $50 worth of orders all together, we will earn $8 in free books. With each order placed, our class also earns bonus points that I can then use to purchase more books for the classroom or even other materials like math manipulative for the classroom. It is a great program to get involved in. Thank you for supporting your child’s reading both at home and in the classroom!
