PWSLA
April 2015
Our Vision: Support and grow the Prince William County school library community.
President's Message from Kathy Wick
I marvel (and yes stress a little - or a lot) at how much more there is still to accomplish between now and the end of the year. Yes it is busy and there is so much to do, but don't forget to reach out to your colleagues if you have questions, ideas to share or need help. Many of us may be on our own in our buildings, but WE ARE NOT ALONE! COMMUNICATE, COLLABORATE, and CELEBRATE with each other. There is wealth of support and fellowship out there for the taking. Two prime examples are our final PLC of the year on April 21st and our Spring Banquet May 7th. See details below and please join us!
Please consider joining the Board!
Our organization exists to support all of us- the school librarians and support staff of Prince William County. An organization can only remain strong and responsive to it's membership if people are willing to get involved. We need new faces, new ideas, new people to be part of the Board. Do you have strong opinions? Great ideas? Need something to include on your PPP? Want to dip a toe into a professional organization? WE NEED YOU! We are looking for people to fill the following positions on the PWSLA Board:
- President Elect (you don't move up to President for two years so you can ease into it!)
- Secretary - 1 year position
- Treasurer - 2 year position
- Advocacy Chair
- Membership Chair (you hand out PWSLA brochures annually and keep the spreadsheet of members up to date)
- Members for the Social Committee (work together to plan social events such as happy hours, lunches after LIB meetings and the annual Holiday and Spring banquets
- Directory Chair (update the annual electronic directory and take pictures of new members
Contact Kathy Wick at wickks@pwcs.edu or Beth Bowen at bowenew@pwcs.edu if you have questions or are interested! These positions are NOT time consuming and it is a great group of people to be involved with.

One Question Responses from March
From Betsy Masterson, Gravely ES:
I was fortunate enough to have a FREE author visit "fall into my lap" ~ one of the many perks of promoting our local school business partners!
I am in the process of securing an author for my 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders and am hoping to try something different...an author for the boys (Fred Bowen) and a separate one for the girls (Katy Kelly). I am in the discussion process with both authors, so neither are set in stone yet.
From Dublin & Mitchell, Stonewall MS
This year, three local authors are visiting our school. No travel expenses for authors helps keep our costs down.
Nancy Silcox met with our 7th graders on March 11th. Linda met her at her workshop at the Potomac Regional Conference in 2014. Her book, Samuel Wilbert Tucker: The Story of a Civil Rights Trailblazer and the 1939 Alexandria Library Sit-In is her first book. She met with our 7th graders to talk about her writing process and Tucker's life.
In June Ann McCallum, author of Eat Your Math Homework and Eat your Science Homework will speak to sixth graders.
Kristy Feltenberger Gillespie, self published author of the YA Nirvana Trilogy is also a guidance counselor at Marsteller MS will be speaking to our 8th graders about her novel, Jaded.
Local Writer's Organizations that may help find authors for a visit are:
*PWCS free speaker list
*Write by the Rails -- Manassas area writers
*James River Writers -- Richmond area writers
*Washington Writers Conference -- DC area writers
