Galveston ISD at the Galveston Economic Development Partnership (GEDP) Summit

Galveston ISD and Ball High School played a large role in this year’s Ninth Annual Galveston Economic Development Partnership (GEDP) Summit. The event, held at Texas A&M Galveston, featured speakers and panelists from the island’s business community including our very own Superintendent Dr. Jerry Gibson. Showcasing their talents as the future of the Galveston economy were Ball High School students involved in the Career & Technical Education (CTE) program. The award-winning Robotics team highlighted their latest designs, along with virtual reality Welding training demonstrated by students, a live podcast talk show hosted by Ball High Media Arts on-air talent, Engineering and aeronautic projects, and an inside look at IncubaTOR Entrepreneurship studies. We are growing future business leaders right here in GISD!

Hall of Honor

Public schools have existed on Galveston Island since 1884. Many notable individuals have walked the halls in those 138 years, and soon, those who have distinguished themselves as role models within their profession or in their communities at large will be memorialized in the Galveston Public Schools Hall of Honor. The inaugural class of around 20 inductees will be announced in the spring of 2022 and a handful of carefully selected candidates will be inducted every year thereafter.

Learn more about the Galveston Public Schools Hall of Honor and submit your nominations today at https://www.gisd.org/community/hallofhonor.

Kelly's Angels Donations

Each year Trey Click supports Kelly's Angels by providing bicycles to our students in Galveston. Mr. Click is the executive director of the Historic Downtown Galveston Partnership and is a great partner for GISD's Discovery Club. Thanks to Mr. Click, a number of students will be able to enjoy a new bicycle this year.

If you are interested in learning more about how you can donate to Kelly's Angels, please email GISD's Executive Director of Special Programs Mary Patrick at marypatrick@gisd.org.

Kelley's Angels

The Discovery Club in the Galveston ISD is program that operates under TEHCY (Texas Education for Homeless Children and Youth). We provide services to the children and families of GISD that have the most need. We assist our students and parents with different resources that are available throughout the school year.

We are preparing for our annual “Kelley’s Angels” Adopt-A-Child for Christmas Project. We have selected students for the Adopt-A-Child Christmas Project from each campus with the assistance of campus staff. We have chosen students who are present in school in spite of the barriers they face daily. Each year, The Discovery Club hosts a Christmas celebration for the students and they will receive Christmas gifts from individuals or businesses who have adopted them.

Our community has been a great asset to the students of Galveston ISD. We greatly appreciate your continued support of our students.

We need your help. Students have provided a small list of their Needs and Wants. They often ask for items such as a bicycle, a basketball, art supplies, dolls, food, clothes and other items. We would like to respectfully request that individuals or your business/agency assist us by selecting a student(s) or donating a bicycle. If you would just like to adopt a student or donate a bicycle, you may do so. Your generosity and partnership with the Galveston Independent School District will be greatly appreciated.

If you’d like to assist in this celebration, contact me at MaryPatrick@gisd.org to be a part of a great holiday expression of support for our students.

Mary Patrick is Executive Director of Special Programs, Early Childhood, Homeless and Foster Care Liaison for the Galveston Independent School District.
