Sixth Grade Social Studies
In November the 6th grade magnet Social Studies class will be starting on the National History Day Project. Most of the project will be completed in class but some work will be done outside of the classroom (at home).
Seventh Grade Social Studies
In 7th grade Social Studies, we will be exploring the concept of change by analyzing how where we live influences how we live. Through research and investigations students will learn how people have adapted to living in different regions around the world. They will explore ways people modify the environment to meet their needs and analyze the impact of those changes on the environment. Upcoming activities include a DBQ on China's Water Scarcity and a World Regions Mural that students have requested to present to the 5th grade Magnet class at BES.
Eighth Grade Social Studies
The 8th grade Social Studies class will be studying the American Revolution; mainly important battles of the war that impacted the outcome. They will also be discussing obstacles that the Continental Army overcame in the war.
Sixth Grade Language Arts
The 6th grade magnet ELA students will be reading Roll of Thunder, Hear my Cry and they will need to complete a literature web as well as be expected to engage in Socratic Seminars. They will also be working on grammar study, which is where students will be practicing their grammar on No Red Ink.
Seventh Grade Language Arts
The seventh grade magnet ELA class has begun and will continue through their Utopia unit in November. November highlights include analyzing Utopia artwork, creating a Utopia scene, junior book discussion on Harrison Bergeron, as well as getting a final soup kitchen plan. We finished up Unit 1 with our concept of identity masks using color symbolism, symbols to develop the concept as well as made connections with multiple individuals from texts analyzed in class.
Eighth Grade Language Arts
In November, Mrs. Bradley’s eighth grade class will be starting the William and Mary unit: 1940s Decade of Change. Then, the class will be scripting a narrative scene and a critical review. They will be finishing up their lesson they will be studying the Hero’s Journey.
World Languages
The 6th grade Spanish class will be learning about likes and dislikes with chapter 1A. The 7th grade Spanish class will be learning about family celebrations and describing family relationships in chapter 5A. 8th grade will learning about gift buying in chapter 7B. 8th grade will be doing presentations on clothes shopping. Mrs. Kolsun will try to arrange a Skype conference with Peru as well.
Spy Museum Field Trip
For the Magnet field trip this year, we went to the Spy Museum. In the classroom portion of the museum, we pretended that we were in the Revolutionary War and corresponding with the Spy Ring using invisible ink and solving hidden messages within texts. The other parts of the museum included a spy technology section, James Bond exhibit, and interactive features for us to take part in.
