Year 7 & 8 Technology Term 3
Last week the Year 7 & 8 class took part in their tech rotation. There were four options - trapping, food technology, science and sculptures.
The trapping group worked with the Regional Council and the Rotokare Trust to learn about the trapping programmes in place, to work towards the goal of Predator Free 2050. We then worked hard to create a plan and develop our own traps with the assistance of George Gallop.
The science group worked on a range of experiments based on chemical reactions and change of matter. We focused on fizzing and foaming, kitchen science, environmental science and banging bombs. Thanks to Esther from the Regional Council who assisted us to create a new bug hotel as part of our environmental focus.
The sculpture group worked to create a selection of sculptures using a range of materials. At the end of the week we all created a wire and plaster bandage sculptures, papier mache masks based on Tangaroa and recyclable robots.
The food tech group learnt a variety of skills in the kitchen under the lead of Kathy Wylie. The groups had the privilege of visiting Marbles and the WITT food tech rooms learning about hospitality and food preparations. At the end of the week they delivered a stunning meal to a guest consisting of homemade coca cola, salad, pizza and cheesecake. Delicious !
BOARD OF TRUSTEES UPDATE
Enrolment Scheme
Currently our scheme is open for enrolments in Year 1 - 6.
Query, concern, complaint - what to do?
We now have a new page on our website to answer the above question. This can be found in the Parent Information tab: Query, concern, complaint - what to do?
At our most recent BOT meeting it was decided that we will not be implementing a school uniform for Toko School. The results of our most recent survey were not conclusive enough to warrant pursuing this further at this time.
Recommendations:
To include school uniform as a question in our next Community Survey in 2021.
To investigate offering more choices for optional Toko School branded clothing eg, hoodie, singlet, t shirt, beanie, jacket
DROPPING OFF AND COLLECTING YOUR CHILDREN FROM SCHOOL
If you are coming into school we ask that you park out the front of school.
If you are just dropping your children off or collecting them can you please do this from the bus turnaround. Too many people are doing this out the front of school and it is an accident waiting to happen.
SCHOLASTIC BOOK CLUB
Please ensure if you send in a cheque it is made out to Scholastic Books
SPEECHBOARD
Toko has been involved in Speechboard for the past 14 years. It is aimed for children in Years 3 to 8. As a school we firmly believe that the skills the children gain from participating in this over many years are invaluable as they become young adults. The main aim of Speechboard is to develop versatility in the use of language, oral presentation and performance skills in young people.
An overview of Speechboard was sent with individual children on 8th August 2019 as to what the requirements are, for each year level. Speech Board assessments run from the 16th to 20th September.
PTA UPDATE
We can now confirm that we will be having calves as well as lambs this year. Our organisation will be slightly different this year. Guidelines are available here, on our website and via the school app. If you require a hard copy please contact the office.

Toko School Cross Country
Our school Cross Country is scheduled for tomorrow, Friday 30th August. There is no postponement date due to the Rural Schools Cross Country the following week. The 9-13year old runners, will be venturing out into the O’Sullivan’s paddock which runs on the far side of the school house. Running out into the paddock has allowed us to include some hill climbs and a fence jump making it more like the Rawhitiroa course. If you would like to watch runners while they are in the paddock a good view point is on the side of the road just up past the school house.
Races will begin at 1pm.
Race Order:
13 & 12years, 11years, 10years, 9years, 5years, 6years, 7years, 8years. Please come at the start of the Cross Country to avoid any disappointment of missing a race as the starting times will depend on numbers not time.
