Principal's Message

Dear St. Maria Goretti Catholic School Families,

What a wonderful First Week of School we had at SMG! Students and their families came to meet their teachers, bring school supplies, sign-up for various activities and events, and met new and old friends. On Tuesday, we eased back into the swing of things on the First Day of School with a noon dismissal before our first full-day on Wednesday when students began rotating through their core and specials classes. We also celebrated Mass together, students had their pictures taken, enjoyed snack, lunch & recess time, and we welcomed our SMEED staff and students back. We again attended Mass together on Thursday as we celebrated the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and we ended the week with our first Household gatherings in all homerooms. Though it's always exciting to start the new school year, I am sure there are at least a few who welcomed the weekend and the opportunity to rest up before Monday and another busy week ahead!

Prayer Bags

As I mentioned in the Welcome Back edition of the Trojan Times, we hope to further extend the faith and prayer enrichment that our students experience at school and will be sending home Prayer Bags on a rotating basis with one student from every homeroom on Friday afternoons. In the Prayer Bags, families will find family devotional prayer books, a rosary, a St. Maria Goretti prayer card, and other items we hope families will find useful to enrich their family prayer time at home. We pray you will find the Prayer Bags a helpful addition to your family prayer time and ask that you kindly return the bag with your student(s) the following Thursday, so that teachers are able to send it home with another student for another family to enjoy the next week.

SMG Family Handbook

The 2019-2020 Family Handbook has been posted on the school website. Please read the handbook as there have been some changes and updates. Please print, sign, and return the acknowledgement form at the back of the handbook indicating that you have read and understand the handbook. A signed acknowledgement form from each family is due back to the school by Friday, August 30th.

School uniforms should be purchased from Mills Uniforms. In addition, girls in grades 4 & 5 may wear the plaid skirts that were listed at Mills for only 6th-8th grade girls. Mills has been notified and should have plenty of the uniform skirts in stock. Please visit the SMG uniform requirements on the Mills Uniforms website for specific SMG uniform requirements (http://www.millswear.com). Use SMG school code 3424.

Box Tops for Education

The Box Tops for Education program is changing the way we can earn cash for our school! Over the summer, participating brands have begun to change their packaging from the traditional Box Tops clip to the new Box Tops label.

Going forward, instead of clipping from packages and checking expiration dates, all Box Tops will be earned digitally by scanning your receipt. The Box Tops for Education team has worked hard to build a NEW-and-improved, user-friendly Box Tops mobile app, available now. The new app features state-of-the-art technology that allows you to scan your store receipt, find participating products and instantly add Box Tops to our school's earnings online.

If you still have traditional Box Tops clips at home, make sure to send them to school. We will still earn cash for all clipped Box Tops until they expire. Better yet, you can “double dip” during the packaging transition by clipping traditional Box Tops AND scanning your store receipt containing participating products.

For more information, including information on downloading the new Box Tops app, please visit https://smgschool.org/boxtops

Thanks for helping our school get what it needs!

Band Demo

Fourth and fifth grade students were introduced to various band instruments during a presentation by Music Learning Band. Music Learning Band provides music/band instruction to 4th-8th Grade students at SMG. If your student is interested in Band for this year, it's not too late! Please email Mrs. de la Pena (jdelapena@smgschool.org) with a written request, and Mr. Cullen, Band Director, (ccullen@musiclearningband.com) for more information.

Team Building STEM Challenge

Third grade teams competed to design and engineer the longest paper chain in 30 minutes.

Households

On Friday students and their teachers came together for the first time as Households. Households of St. Maria Goretti Catholic School are Spirit-filled, Christ-led groups of students who work together helping each other to grow in mind, body, and spirit. Households pray, hear and reflect on Sunday's gospel, and build community within their homeroom classes and the school as a whole. It is our prayer that by participating in Households, students will continue to create a culture in the school that is transforming, community-building, and life giving.

Virtus Training

All school volunteers over the age of 18 must complete the required Diocesan Safe Environment training, also referred to as VIRTUS training, prior to volunteering.

This training consists of an in person class and a criminal background check. After completing the training, your certification is good for 2 years. After 2 years, you will need to complete a renewal course. You may not volunteer at school until we receive notification of your completion of the training course, and until your background check clears. This includes all school related activities such as lunch monitor, playground monitor, field trip chaperone, class party helper, library volunteer, Kountry Karnival worker, and many other opportunities.

**You may not volunteer in any capacity without first completing this training. You will not receive SPIRIT hour credit for hours completed without training.

Here is the link to set up a VIRTUS account and to sign up to attend a session.

You may register and attend a session at any parish in the Fort Worth diocese. Please email smalloy@smgschool.org if you have any questions or need assistance. Thank you!

Scrip Gift Card Program

Scrip is a gift card program that gives back! Purchase gift cards to your favorite stores and restaurants, and they give a portion of the sales back to the school and families who use the program. We are in the process of updating Scrip and how it is made available to SMG families so that you can earn credit toward tuition!

Mrs. Olivia Bradley will be our Scrip Coordinator this year, and plans are in the works to have Scrip available for purchase (in person) 3 mornings per week inside the Cafetorium doors at drop-off. We are also updating directions on how to purchase Scrip online and are creating an updated order form that will be sent home each week in the Friday Folders or can be picked up at the front office. More information about Scrip will be shared as the updates are completed.
