Thoughts to Ponder: We don't all learn the same way
In an article found on timeforlearning .com 7 different learning styles are summarized for us to think about:
- Visual (spatial): You prefer using pictures, images, and spatial understanding.
- Aural (auditory-musical): You prefer using sound and music.
- Verbal (linguistic): You prefer using words, both in speech and writing.
- Physical (kinesthetic): You prefer using your body, hands and sense of touch.
- Logical (mathematical): You prefer using logic, reasoning and systems.
- Social (interpersonal): You prefer to learn in groups or with other people.
- Solitary (intrapersonal): You prefer to work alone and use self-study
We can all relate to these a little differently. Some of us may be strong verbally while some of us may be strong visually. Some of may learn best listening to things while other learn best while being active. Which ever way we learn, we need to tap into those strengths while we work to strengthen the areas that are not as strong.
Homework
In an attempt for students to understand what type of learner they are, students will complete a multiple intelligences/ learning styles questionnaire. I have included one for parents, guardians or siblings to complete for fun as well if you wish.
Students will also have some math practice this week if they have me for math.
Reading
We have been gearing up to start our new Read180/System 44 reading program with the older students. They have completed placement tests and we will be working on getting our procedures in place this next week so we are up and running completely by the 13th.
Guided reading groups for our younger students have begun. These lessons are focusing on different strategies and skills needed by each student to strengthen decoding, sight words, fluency, and comprehension.
Math
We will focus strongly this week on using place value to represent numbers in different ways, to compare numbers and to order numbers. Students will work towards personal goals to master these skills at a level that is challenging to them.
Writing
We are working on differentiating between facts and opinions, writing opinion sentences and using graphic organizers to write opinion essays.
