MCIU Eyes & Ears Bulletin
February 2024 Edition
Senior Spotlight: Gabbi Ginaldi
Explore Your Future
Gabbi is a senior at Upper Dublin High School and will graduate this June. She has bilateral hearing loss and has been receiving hearing support services through MCIU since 3rd grade.
Gabbi participated in the Explore Your Future program offered in summer 2023. This program is a six-day career exploration program at Rochester Institute of Technology for college-bound deaf and hard-of-hearing high school students. This program focuses on personal growth and career awareness for students as they begin to think about college. She got to meet and build relationships with other deaf and hard of hearing students who use a variety of communication modes. This experience also gave her the opportunity to meet current students at RIT/ NTID and identify possible college majors.
Gabbi is taking American Sign Language 1 online through the World of Learning Institute. This class has helped her to develop her skills and knowledge of ASL as well as further encourage her goal of becoming an interpreter.
Gabbi will be going to Rochester Institute of Technology in September majoring in American Sign Language-English Interpretation. She was inspired to become an interpreter partially because of her mom but also because she has felt torn between the deaf/ hard of hearing and hearing worlds. This career will help her to build the bridge between those two worlds on a personal level. Gabbi loves working with children and plans to become an educational interpreter.
We wish her the best of luck at RIT!
RIT/NTID Visits High School Hearing Classroom
In January, students in the MCIU Hearing Support High School Program had a visit from Rick Postl, the Director of Admissions for RIT/NTID. Rick shared information about RIT/NTID University as well as summer program opportunities for high school students who are Deaf/Hard of Hearing.
Classroom Decorating for Visual and Sensory Needs
Classroom decorating has a major influence on students and can be a game changer for students who have visual and sensory needs. Find out how to make a classroom environment the best it can be that our TVIs (teachers of the visually impaired) here at the MCIU recommend and often help design.
