The Cougar Connection

Principal News & Notes September 2023 Issue

Welcome Back, Cougars!

Thank you all for a wonderful start to the school year! The transition back, although tiring, has been seamless. Our students and teachers have been energized and enthusiastic and it is simply wonderful to have the building full of life again.

Empowering Engagement & Fostering a Sense of Belonging

As part of our Antiracist work and in response to our school Antiracist survey data, this year we will partner with our community to foster a better sense of belonging for all. As educators, it is our goal to provide our students with a learning environment where they can thrive. Our students enter our building with different experiences and perspectives, different stages of development, and different stories. Our staff works to form trusting relationships with them to meet them where they are in order to help them excel and achieve at the highest level possible. This is no easy task, but we know if students and community members feel a sense of belonging, this hard work becomes a bit easier.

I urge us all to consider and reflect on the following questions throughout this year:

  • How can we work together to better understand each others stories to build a better sense of belonging at Cold Spring?
  • How do we individually contribute to each community members sense of belonging at Cold Spring?

Thank you to everyone who provided us with your thoughts during Back to School Night. If you were unable to take the survey, please click the link below to access it. This data is critical as we are focused on creating an environment that students, staff, and community members feel they belong.

Sense of Belonging Parent Survey

An Opportunity for You

This year I am excited to collaborate and empower our stakeholders with the creation of a Parent Focus Group for Cold Spring. Our work will be to come together and discuss important topics like curriculum, communication, connection, and more. If you are interested in being a part of this focus group, keep an eye out for more communication in the coming weeks in our Sunday PAWS updates.

Giving Thanks

We want to thank our amazing PTA for supporting our transition back to school. Our staff certainly felt the love. The PTA provided lunch and dinner for staff during our pre-service work week, and most recently was able to fund a brand new piano for our music department. Your partnership is incredible! We look forward to collaborating in the best interest of our students and community!

Attention 4th & 5th Grade Parents: A Note from Mr. Poet

Greetings Cold Spring parents,

On Tuesday, I met with all 4th and 5th grade students to inform them about the instrumental music program at school. This program is available to any 4th and 5th grade student who would like to participate, and lessons are completely free. Students that enroll will receive music lessons once a week on the instrument of their choice, and there will even be a concert at the end of the school year. No prior musical knowledge or experience is required, so I really encourage all students to consider giving it a try!

*******************************

(Big shoutout to the almost 50 students who have registered already! So awesome!)

*******************************

Lessons typically begin around the first week of October. I will be sending out further communication in the next week or two regarding how to best acquire an instrument for your child, so please be on the lookout for that. Please feel free to direct any specific questions to me directly at Christopher_Poet@mcpsmd.org.

Volunteer Information - We NEED You!

Parent and community members may volunteer to support lunch and recess, as well as classroom activities and special events as the school deems appropriate. We truly appreciate the time and effort that parents, families, and community members spend to engage in volunteer activities and become contributing partners in building a safe and supportive learning environment.

MCPS has different requirements for three different categories of volunteers (click here for more information):

  • One-time volunteers: Volunteers at one-time events ALWAYS working under the supervision of MCPS staff members do NOT need to complete compliance measures other than registering as campus visitors through the Visitor Management System (VMS).

    • Examples: Parents/guardians staffing concessions and ticket booths at large events, guest readers and speakers in classrooms, parents/guardians or other relatives who are observing or supporting a celebration (e.g. parade) or helping with a class party.

  • Regular volunteers: Volunteers who regularly support school or school-sponsored activities must complete the MCPS online training on Recognizing Child Abuse and Neglect.

    • Examples: Student teachers and interns, volunteers who regularly help with school dismissal or recess, chaperones for field trips occuring during the school day.

  • Frequent volunteers: Volunteers who have frequent and independent contact with students, unsupervised by MCPS staff members, must complete the MCPS online training on Recognizing Child Abuse and Neglect AND a criminal background check, including fingerprinting.

    • Examples: Volunteer coaches, chaperones on overnight field trips.

When entering the building during the school day, volunteers will first need to sign-in with the main office (VMS) and receive a visitor sticker (please note that stickers will not be required during special events such as a school play or the Halloween parade). Also, visiting parents are prohibited from taking videos or photographs of other children or of instruction while at school to respect our parent requests for child privacy.

Lost & Found Items

Please label your children's items so when they are misplaced, it is easier to locate them. We have lost and found table and coat rack in our All Purpose Room. If your child misplaced their lunchbox, water bottle, coat/jacket, etc. please let us know or ask the main office if you can check this area.

Show Your Appreciation

From our Staff Appreciation Chair, Lindsay Koosed

Please help us take care of our wonderful faculty and staff by keeping their staff lounge stocked with goodies! We have 43 staff members, so a Costco-sized box is enough to make sure everyone finds something they like. Once you sign up and leave your email, I will email you directly with my address so you can drop off your donation before the date listed on this Signup Genius. I will then bring everything to school at once to minimize disruption. Please let me know if you have any questions and thank you!!
