Bridging the Gap

My mother has always been an influential figure in my life. She is someone I can turn to when I am unsure of myself or need help. All my life she has been by my side, ready to support me at a moment's notice. Although I take her help for granted more often than I should, my mother has undoubtedly left a huge impression on my life that I will never forget.

“And then a hero comes along, with the strength to carry on, and you cast your fears aside and you know you can survive, so when you feel like hope is gone, look inside you and be strong, and you'll finally see the truth, that a hero lies in you.” – Mariah Carey

The songwriter describes a hero as someone that pushes through fear and hopelessness; a hero is someone that finds strength where others do not. They also state that everyone has the potential to be a hero.

Beowulf is a hero that wins despite the odds stacked against him. Even against opponents as strong as Grendel and his mother, who have slaughtered countless men, he emerges victorious. Beowulf rises to the hopeless task of defeating a seemingly invincible monster and carries on despite the disadvantage he faces.

Although my mother has not slain any monsters she can still be considered a hero. When I had given up in the past and lost all hope, she would give me the strength I needed. Her unconditional support and love has proven to be invaluable countless times.
