The Rideau Report

Principal's Message

"It's hard to beat a person who never gives up." Babe Ruth

Remote learning has started well for most of our students, who have managed the switch back to online learning quickly and with only a few small glitches on the way. We are so proud of the resilience and grit of our students, and all our families, as we continue to learn together in these challenging, uncertain times. We know that this is stressful, and a lot of work for parents, educators, and kids; we also know our Rideau community is strong and tight-knit, and together we will work to meet the needs of students as we look forward to being together again safely and soon.

At this point we don't know when or if we will be back to in-person learning this year. Limestone along with all Boards, students and families across Ontario are waiting to see what the next few weeks bring. We hope that the measures we have put in place will help control the third wave of the pandemic to a point where it is safe to return to Rideau, because we know that is the best learning environment for students' academic needs and mental well-being. Nonetheless as long as we continue with remote learning, we will work with families to best meet the needs of all our learners, with flexibility around screen time, paper packages, and other supports. If there is anything we can do to help, please reach out.

While we are apart, Rideau continues to build a sense of school community through several whole-school initiatives this month. We have an exciting virtual concert coming up next week, along with Spirit Days, and our continuing run across Canada, which this week reached an exciting milestone! More information about all of these events can be found below in the newsletter. We hope that students enjoy these opportunities and that they help everyone feel a little bit more connected to Rideau.

We try to make our communications with families as effective as possible. All email communication will be done through School Messenger this year, so please ensure that we have your correct email address on file at school. Our website: also has our newsletters, a school calendar, and other useful information. Twitter is another way to keep up with what's happening at Rideau. Follow us @RideauPS_LDSB . You don't even need a Twitter account to follow us! Just Google @RideauPS_LDSB and you can see our Twitter feed. You can always get in touch with us through email at or by calling the school at 613-546-5901. Thank you for your continued support of the work we do every day!

What If My Child is Not Going to Be Participating in Remote Learning on a Given Day?

Please continue to use the Safe Arrival system to report your child's absence if your child is not going to be accessing online learning (either synchronously or asynchronously) over a 24 hour period. Attendance calls will continue to be sent out automatically to those students who have not made contact with their teacher, or participated in any form of learning. This is to help us keep a connection and ensure the well-being of every child. If you do not wish to receive a call, please use the automated Safe Arrival System to create an absence. There are three ways to do this:

1. Toll-free telephone

  • Call 1-855-257-9349 toll-free to report an absence using the automated phone system.

2. School Messenger App

  • Use your mobile device to download and install the free SchoolMessenger blue app from the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store, the SchoolMessenger website portal, or from within the LDSB mobile app.
  • The first time you use the app, you must select Sign Up to create your account. Please ensure you use the same email address your student’s school has on file. If you do not use that same email address, you will not be able to create an account, or may not be able to see the "Attendance" option. You may have already created an account when we introduced the Communicate broadcast system.
  • Select Attendance, then select Report an Absence and follow the prompts.

3. SchoolMessenger SafeArrival Website Portal
  • Visit the SchoolMessenger website portal.

Rideau Runs from Coast to Coast!

Rideau Runners are amazing! Since our last update, students have continued to run at home, reporting their km to their teachers. As a school, we have now run more than 2800 km, which has taken us from our start in Saint John's Newfoundland all the way to Kingston!! Way to go Rhinos! That is farther than running to Disneyworld, Dallas Texas, or Regina Saskatchewan! We are more than a third of the way across Canada, as we contine to run to Victoria BC, which is now only about 4600 km away. Keep up the great running, Rhinos!

class placement requests

We are beginning to organize for the upcoming school year. This includes staffing, timetables and new registrations. Our planning also addresses next year’s class placements for students.

The creation of classes is a complex task that takes into account many factors. When determining placements for next year we consider learning and academic needs, behavioural and social needs, gender balance and class size. Our ultimate goal is to create balanced classrooms that maximize the potential for student learning.

We recognize that, in a few individual cases, there may be important reasons why a specific placement is requested. In these cases, please submit a written or emailed request directly to our office indicating the reasons for your request. The request should identify the optimal conditions for your child’s success but should not indicate a specific teacher request. We will do our best to accommodate your child’s needs but cannot guarantee specific placements. All written requests must be received no later than May 21st. We appreciate your support and understanding in this matter.

It is that time of year when we start planning for next year. If you know your child will be moving to a different school and will not be at Rideau for September 2021, please contact the office or your child's teacher to let us know.
