2017 Summer Reading

20 Minutes a Day Keeps the Summer Slide Away

"Summer slide" is the tendency for students to lose some of the achievement gains they made during the previous school year. The good news is that preventing summer slide is as easy as reading for 20 minutes a day over the summer. The best news is that children who read for 20 minutes a day over the summer can make a "summer leap" and actually make reading gains!

Watch this short video to learn how to prevent the summer slide!

What should my kid be reading?

This is a question that librarians and teachers get a lot, and luckily the answer is simple. Your kiddo should be reading whatever interest them. According to the 2016 Kids and Family Reading Report 89% of kids agree that their favorite books are the ones that they have picked themselves. So if they love learning about dinosaurs let them read all about dinosaurs. If they are rereading their Harry Potter book for what feels like the 10th time, that is okay too. If graphic novels are their thing, let them read graphic novels. Kids who spend time reading are better readers regardless of what they read.

If your child is needing some reading inspiration trying a book on the either the Texas 2x2 list or the Texas Bluebonnet Reading List are great places to start.
