KINDREE KIDS IN 3A, 3B & 3C
December 2013 Newsletter
Curriculum Connections
The Grade Three team would like to thank all parents for meeting with us earlier this month to discuss progress reports. It is such an important time to connect with parents and discuss your child’s successes and identify areas for improvement.
As we move into December we continue to revisit identifying the features of fictional texts (i.e., beginning, middle, end, characters, setting, etc.). Students record the features using a graphic organizer in order to retell the narrative in the correct sequence. The grade three students will continue to use graphic organizers to record main ideas and supporting details in order to write short, simple paragraphs.
In mathematics, the grade three students are working towards adding and subtracting two and three-digit numbers with and without regrouping. Many students would benefit from playing dice games at home to reinforce this skill (i.e., rolling dice to create two three-digit numbers and adding/subtracting them). We will begin our 2D geometry unit by identifying and comparing various polygons (i.e., triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, etc.) and sorting them by their geometric properties (e.g., number of sides, side lengths, number of right angles, etc.).
We had a fantastic day of learning about pioneers at Country Heritage Park. The students have been writing about all that they learned in order to create a scrapbook of our trip. We will continue to investigate and describe the communities of early settlers in Upper Canada around 1800 and their countries of origin. We will connect this new learning to the students’ projects about their own ancestry and why their families chose to immigrate to Canada. Students will be working on a culminating task toward the end of the unit (watch for further details).
Students continue to engage in science experiments focusing on Forces and Movement. They will continue to develop an understanding that there are several types of forces (push or pull) that cause movement and changes in movement. Students will have many opportunities to develop these concepts through hands-on experiments and investigations.
