Math 8: Equations and Looking for Pythagoras
Next we moved on to discovering the Pythagorean Theorem in several different ways. See this with Polystrips in the pictures below. Students should also know how to find and estimate square roots and cube roots and how to find distance on a coordinate plane.
Hopefully you'll see some of this work in the student portfolios at Open House on April 21st.
We are happy to welcome Mr. Lee, a student teacher from Pepperdine University, who will be working with the students through the end of April. Here's a brief statement from Mr. Lee:
"It's been a joy so far being able to teach and to learn with your child. I grew up in Irvine, CA and graduated from Pepperdine University in Spring 2015. I am currently pursuing my single subject teaching credentials in Math at Pepperdine University. I love to play and watch sports, spend time with family and friends, and learning! Every day, I look forward to working with the students. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions/comments/concerns."On a final note, you may enjoy the video below on the teen brain and "How Youth Learn."
Algebra: Equations of Lines
Again if your student has not mastered a standard this semester (has a score of 2 or less), please remind them to seek extra help and reassess. I am available for help during lunch almost every day - and after school on Thursday. Mr. Lee, the student teacher from Pepperdine (see above) is available on most Mondays and Wednesdays after school through April.
We were also very excited to get new Scientific Calculators for the classroom last week! We'd like to thank Mr. Richardson for finding room in the school budget to support this.

AVID
For the last few weeks, students been researching careers of interest. They are working with a partner in a similar career field and putting together a presentation on their careers; they are using either Google slides and/or making posters to present their careers.
