Celebrate Black History Month 2023

February is Black History Month and is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing their central role in U.S. history. Also known as African American History Month, it honors all Black people from all periods of U.S. history, from the enslaved people first brought over from Africa in the early 17th century to African Americans living in the United States today.

Since 1976, every American president has designated February as Black History Month and endorsed a specific theme, The Black History Month 2023 theme, Black Resistance, explores how "African Americans have resisted historic and ongoing oppression, in all forms, especially the racial terrorism of lynching, racial pogroms and police killings," since the nation's earliest days.

English Language Proficiency Assessments February 1

The Summative English Language Proficiency Assessments for California, or “Summative ELPAC,” is the test used to measure how well students understand English when it is not the language they speak at home. This years testing window is open from February 1, to May 31st 2023. Information from the ELPAC tells your child’s teacher about the areas in which your child needs extra support.

This spring, your child may take the Summative ELPAC.

Students in kindergarten through grade twelve who are classified as English learners will take the Summative ELPAC every year until they are reclassified as proficient in English. Students are tested on their skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Your child’s voice is being recorded as part of the Speaking test.

You are an important part of your child’s education. To help your child get ready for the test, you can:

· Read to your child, or have them read to you on a regular basis.

· Use pictures and ask your child to tell you what they see, or what is happening in each picture.

· Provide your child with opportunities to use language outside of school.

· Talk with your child’s teacher about your child’s listening, speaking, reading and writing skills to help support their progress.

To learn more about the ELPAC, go to the California Department of Education Parent Guides to Understanding web page at https://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/ca/parentguidetounderstand.asp.

You also can look at sample test questions on the practice tests, which can be found on the ELPAC Starting Smarter website at https://elpac.startingsmarter.org/ .

If you have any questions about your child taking the ELPAC, please contact Mrs. Tellez-Soto, EL Support Teacher at 805.488.2217 ext. 1887 or via email at: rtellez@hueneme.org

Start the day off right!

Hathaway community, please ensure that our students arrive to campus no later than 8:00 am. Arriving on time allows students time to walk to their line and be ready to be picked up by their teacher. Students should be in their seats by 8:05 am. Students arriving after 8:05 are marked tardy.

Universal Meals

Great news! starting this year throughout California, as a result of Education Code (EC) 49501.5, all students in grades TK–12 will be provided two meals free of charge (breakfast and lunch) during every school day regardless of their free or reduced-price meal eligibility!

Good food and nutrition are an essential part of great learning!
