October News!
Lua Families...
Welcome to October and our 5th week of school. In each classroom, the expectations have been set and systems are in place. October is when learning begins to pick up speed. Please help your students set up well-organized routines at home where reading happens often. Daily Reading makes an impact! Please read to your children, have them read to you, and set aside a quiet spot where reading can become routine. Many thanks for your support!
No School October 20th and 21st
Please remember that we have two no school days approaching. MEA days are Thursday, October 20 and Friday, October 21. Although teachers will be at school, students get a four day weekend! Enjoy your family time!

Positive Messages
Thanks to a group of friends who asked permission to create positive chalk art at our school over the weekend, our students were welcomed by positive messages on Monday morning! Phrases like, "You're awesome!" and "Be Joyful!" lined our sidewalk. Come see them for yourself!
Growth Mindset Friday
October 7th and 21st are Growth Mindset Fridays this month! Ms. Dandelet will give a 15 minute lesson in each classroom continuing the discussion about growth mindset. Remember, a growth mindset is one that believes success will happen with effort. At LUA, we believe that failing is another word for learning, and mistakes create learning opportunities.
Relax with a Book Day!
Monday, October 31st is officially Relax with a Book Day! Students are encouraged to participate by wearing pjs or comfy clothes to school. There will be book activities throughout the day like buddy reading, flashlight reading, and back by popular demand Harry Potter Potion Smoothies that Ms. Dandelet will make during the lunch hour (dairy free/gluten free/nut free). In addition to other special reading events happening throughout the day. At LUA we strive to be inclusive and not exclusive. We hope that by providing a fun alternative on Halloween day and focusing on Books (something everyone can participate in) we will provide our students with a fun day!
The O in weCODE = Ownership!
During the month of October we are focusing on the O in weCODE. Students heard the lesson on Ownership at our All-School Assembly on Monday morning. At LUA we will take ownership of our words, actions, and work. Ownership is another way of saying, "We are responsible for ourselves." Adults in the building are looking for students showing ownership of their words, actions, and work this month. We are acknowledging students with weCODE tickets. Just in... last month our LUA students earned 500 weCODE tickets as a school! We are working toward a goal of 2000 tickets to earn our all-school celebration! We can't wait!! Keep up the good work LUA Kids!
The LUA office is looking for help!
If you are a parent who would like an occasional volunteer opportunity, we are looking for you! Right now the LUA office has a growing list of needs. We are keeping a list of volunteer opportunities that consist of everything from making "weCODE" backpack buttons for our students to organizing the winter "emergency" clothes before the winter begins. If you would like to help us out, please contact Leslie Sieleni in the office sieleni@levelupacademy.org and let her know your availability. You may set up a time to volunteer, or just add your name to the list of those we can call.
November After School Club
Fourth through seventh graders, please plan ahead for a fun after school club experience with Ms. Berryhill. November's theme will be "Cooking for the Winter Days" and will be held each Thursday in November from 3:45-5:00. Students will be following recipes they can bring home to share at family gatherings or just to enjoy themselves! The cost is $40. Money and permission forms are due to the office by October 27th. The October after-school club starts tomorrow. The theme is Pokemon Go! Thanks to all who signed up!
Hip Hop in PE!
Laurisa, our Just For Kix dance instructor who teaches youth dance lessons after school at LUA will be a guest instructor in our PE program October 26th and 28th. She will be teaching two days of Hip Hop. Mr. Jones will accompany her during these classes. We are looking forward to seeing our students' heart rates rise as they experience the fun of learning the basic steps of Hip Hop. She will return at other times during the year to lead our students in other forms of group fitness activities.
Coding in Middle School
We will have a guest instructor,Liv Krusinski, in the middle school room next Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Liv, a senior from Stillwater High School, and computer science "girl who codes" enthusiast will lead our middle school class through three hours of coding. By Friday, all middle schoolers will have developed their own video game. Liv is a great role-model for innovation. She even started her own business at age 11!
