Ideas for Parents about Jobs and Rules:
It is important to give children meaningful jobs. In our classrooms, lists of jobs are present and children are given many "chore-type" responsibilities as they care for our school. Children do things like window washing, sweeping, pet care, table setting and more. Children feel a sense of fulfillment and belonging when they know they are making a real contribution.
Here is a way to change up your approach at home, while making it fun too:
Decide as a family what jobs need to be done. Put them in a jar and let each child draw out a few each week. Then no one is stuck with the same chores all the time. You can also invoke children to help them create house rules and list them on a chart entitled, "We Decided." Children have ownership, motivation, and enthusiasm when they are included in decisions.
