A Message from Dr. Manola

Good afternoon, and happy Friday! Can you believe we have just wrapped up week 2? While we continue to navigate all of the challenges and uncertainties we are facing together, we could not be more thrilled with the engagement and attendance we are seeing from all of our students and families! Our teachers continue to talk about how impressive our students have been, and this doesn't happen without your support and guidance. Thank you for all that you are doing!

As we head into week 3, we wanted to provide a quick reminder that in our current Block 3 + PE quarter schedule, the entire 'semester' worth of credit takes place in 9 total weeks. In other words, the three classes your student is currently in will be complete on October 16. So, while we have just completed two weeks of classes, it's more like four weeks. We wanted to make sure to mention this so that we can continue to emphasize the importance of taking part in classes, engaging, and completing all of our work and assignments.

By all means, like always, our number one goal is to make sure students are safe, healthy, and taken care of. If you or your student need anything at all, please reach out to a counselor, social worker, teacher, or administrator anytime. We are all in this together and here for you.

Thank you again for all you do - we truly appreciate it!

Best regards,

Dr. Dominic M. Manola

Online Etiquette

While many of these guidelines may seem obvious, a new medium of communication can tend to throw off some of our instincts for proper etiquette, so we thought it would be helpful to provide a baseline of expectations from which teachers can draw as they work to develop an ideal online atmosphere for learning.

  • Be On-time
  • Choose a good location
  • Mute yourself if you experience unavoidable background noise
  • Be ready to take notes
  • Give your full, focused attention
  • Participate fully
  • Don’t dominate the discussion
  • Do ask questions
  • Be more careful with your words.

Student Access & Open Student Work Spaces

Big picture

To provide opportunities for students who might need connectivity and a quiet work environment, student workspaces in the Field House and Mezzanine are now available to all students on days when school is in session. No direct instruction will take place during these times.

Students must sign-up to access the building as attendance will be taken. Spaces will be limited. Parents/guardians will be contacted if a student does not arrive for their scheduled time.

Students have the opportunity to sign up for Session 1, Session 2, or both. Students are expected to stay for the entire duration of their session.

  • Session 1: 9:00 a.m. - 11:45 a.m

  • Session 2: 12:15 p.m. - 2:30 p.m.

Students may stay for Office hours from 2:30 p.m. to - 3:10 p.m. if needed. A late bus will run at 3:15 p.m. to get students home.

Students who are using these spaces should proceed directly to them and must wear a mask at all times. Additionally, social distancing must be practiced. Student workspaces will be spaced out and provide up to 45 or less workspaces per space to comply with regulations regarding group sizes of 50 or less in any one space. Staff will also be present for supervision in these spaces.

Material Distribution/Pickup Procedures

Students may need physical items from Leyden during the remote learning period. The following procedure will be implemented to allow students to acquire materials necessary to meet course goals or other needs Leyden routinely provides students. This process is subject to change based on the volume of requests.

  1. Students may request materials from a teacher using this form.

  2. The Materials Distribution Coordinator will monitor the form and will process the request.

  3. All completed requests will be housed at Entrance 21 (East) and may be picked up in a drive-through fashion. Students may turn in any homework/materials at that time as well.

  4. Once the Materials Distribution Coordinator contacts you, your materials can be picked up at Entrance 21 daily during three (3) time slots:

  • 7:30 a.m. - 8:45 a.m.
  • 10:45 a.m. - 12:15 p.m.
  • 2:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.

If materials are not picked up within three (3) days, the Materials Distribution Coordinator will contact the teacher to return the materials to him/her. The teacher may reach out to the Deans for support with students who are not engaging.

Virtual Planning & Paying For College

Attention senior students and senior parents, mark your calendars for our Virtual Panning & Paying for College taking place on September 22, 2020, from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. This one-hour virtual program will include information on applying to both two and four-year colleges, as well as detailed information regarding the financial aid process. This will be your first step in helping your son/daughter develop their postsecondary plan. Sessions will be presented in English and Spanish; Information to join the session will be provided closer to the event.

Post-secondary Planning

Senior students will participate in their first group guidance lesson next week. Information will be provided on “Postsecondary Planning - Getting Started!” Following the lesson, counselors will begin scheduling senior meetings to assist ALL seniors in making sure they have a plan in place before they graduate!

Student Support Team

Freshmen students received an email from their counselor with an introduction video from their Student Support Team. Each freshman is on a team made up of their counselor, dean, and social worker. Invite your 9th-grader to play the introduction video for you. We will be checking in with freshmen periodically, but please encourage your child to reach out to any member of their team if they need assistance; we’re here to help!

Free Meal Distribution information

Leyden will provide all Leyden students a healthy school breakfast and lunch at NO CHARGE for the 2020-2021 school year. Students must have their ID to receive a meal. Students should still apply for fee waivers online so they can receive other benefits related to college applications, testing, or scholarships.

Leyden students can participate in these meal programs without having to pay a fee or submit a meal application.

Meal distribution will take place Monday through Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Please note that this program is free to all Leyden students and that a Leyden ID must be presented at meal distribution sites. Parents who are picking up meals must present their child's Leyden ID.
