WAVE HILL
Wave Hill is a 28-acre public garden and cultural center in the Bronx overlooking the Hudson River and Palisades. Its mission is to celebrate the artistry and legacy of its gardens and landscapes, to preserve its magnificent views, and to explore human connections to the natural world through programs in horticulture, education and the arts.

If you would like to plant a tree in your neighborhood here is a link to receive one for free. We will make one of these dates this spring to plant a tree with our students!
Inquire
First graders have been learning the design process of engineers using nature as their guide. Biomimicry literally means life and copy. We use nature as our inspiration to design and fulfill human needs. Biomimicry asks, "How would nature design this?"
This semester we are designing an ant "house" using natural and recycled materials. We are investigating whether to design safe ant traps to keep ants in our classroom or purchase harvester ants to study. After break we will be investigating human needs and how we use the environment to meet these needs. Students will use their knowledge of animals to re-design a human product using biomimicry.

Kindergarten:
Kindergarteners are studying plant and animal families. We studied native plants of Brooklyn and are now studying native animals of New York City. Students are researching their own animals. They will be writing books, creating a model of their animal and building a home for their animal. We will display these animal homes in the Sustainability Studio.
