Love & Logic Parenting Pointers by Diahn Taylor
Remember last month's pointer was to try to give away control and why that's important. Saying "no" isn't always necessary or even best.
One of the best and easiest ways to give away control to children is to simply ask questions! Instead of becoming angry, use empathy and ask them if they remember what happened the last time they tried that. Ask them if they are following the rules. Or you can say: Is that safe? Is that going to cause a problem for others? Is that what everyone else is doing right now?
The question isn't what's magical. It's your empathy and calm demeanor and the fact that you are asking a question that allows them to think for themselves and make a good choice. We want them to do their own thinking, make their own decisions, and solve their own problems. Asking questions gives away control because it puts the ball in their court and it keeps us from saying NO so often. It's always sad to me when parents report that their child's first word is "no." Asking questions is one way to share control with children.
Stay tuned for another way next month...
