Half Way
This week signifies the halfway for the school year. It is a good reminder to assess how we are doing with our energy levels and emotions. It is good to think about how we are doing with respect to where you are. Are you feeling overwhelmed and out of energy? Or do you have enough in the tank to get you to the end of the year? It is okay to feel overwhelmed. It is just good feedback that we might need to do something to keep ourselves in tune with our input and output. What does that mean? It means are we taking care of ourselves? Are we placing as much energy on how we take care of ourselves (input) versus how much energy we place on serving others such as parents, students, and each other (output)? If your energy is low, that can be fixed. Stay hydrated, eat well, sleep more, watch a comedy, take time to be with your family, go on a hike, get out of town for a weekend, exercise, go to acupuncture, get a massage, meditate, go skiing, go sledding, play games, throw a frisbee, take a personal day, do something or anything that breaks up your routine a bit and allows you to enjoy some simple pleasure. You deserve it and your health and regular maintenance are necessary to be at your best at school and for your family at home.
Take care of yourselves!
In The Know
School Choice Information Night - We hosted our annual School Choice Information Night last Thursday. It was a great evening with a strong showing of parents. We had several teachers and departments present to share their curriculum with potential parents. A huge thank you to everyone who was able to make it. This is an important evening as it is critical to ensure student enrollment. Our staffing plan is contingent upon our student enrollment numbers. I missed several departments at this event and the absence was noticeable by staff and parents. Several of you made connections with me and I appreciate that very much. Please know that attendance at this event is required. I was really bummed to see such a gap on this evening. I look forward to a stronger showing the next time around.
Feb 1. PD - We will have professional development on Friday 2/1. Breakfast will be served from 7:30-8:00am. We are hosting Kennedy Middle School and ATA so please be sure to get here early to grab a seat. We will be starting on time at 8:00am. We will have introductions and an opening message before heading out to participate in three 30 minute breakout sessions followed by a student panel in the library before we break for lunch. Lunch will be catered and will happen from 11:30-12:30pm. Lunch is optional. The morning sessions are not. The afternoon is teacher directed for grading and planning.
Black History Month - I am excited to welcome Black History Month to Churchill High School next week. There are many meaningful activities planned that will help share important contributions and achievements that African Americans have made in our nation, our state, our regional and our community. You may remember last year how I stressed the importance that this month is not to be hosted or placed on persons of color to celebrate and promote. It is our collective responsibility to highlight and share the many meaningful and relevant contributions that African Americans have made in each of our content areas. Our students deserve and expect to know how African American contributions have been pivotal in shaping the landscape and fabric of our nation. Now more than ever this message is important. Please find meaningful ways in which we can promote this message to our students and add to the inclusive nature we strive to support here at Churchill.
Black Lives Matter - We will be hosting the Black Lives Matter exhibit in the auditorium during the week of February 11-15. This display is intentionally developed and designed to provide reverence for black lives that were lost. It is important to note that there are a variety of reasons and variable for how these deaths came to light. The display is not intended to cast negative light on police officers, but to share a deeper awareness that there are many societal issues that all contribute to these different outcomes. Teachers may elect to sign their classes up to view this exhibit during this week. Please remember that this is a powerful display and will inevitably provoke powerful feelings. It is important to remember to help students save space for respectful dialogue and understanding. This display is an opportunity to listen to and understand different perspectives. The exhibit is by invitation only. Teachers may sign their classes up to visit on specific dates and class periods. Any student that would like to opt out has the right to do so. They may attend the library while you visit the exhibit. More information regarding the schedule and how to sign up will be forthcoming from the BSU.
Hoodies Up - Tuesday February 5th is Hoodies Up Day in honor of Trayvon Martin. Students are allowed to wear their Hoodies Up on this day. Please honor and respect a students desire to honor the day and the spirit of this day of awareness.
