Eisenhower Elections

1st Election:

-Election held on tuesday November 4th, in 1952

-He was the republican candidate and won by a land-slide

-Ran with Richard Nixon against the republican candidates Adlai Stevenson and John Sparkman

2nd Election:

-Election hell on November 6th, 1956

-Eisenhower was the Republican candidate and once again won the election with ease.

-He was very popular with American people

-Ran with Richard NIxon

-Once again he ran against the solid democratic candidate, Adlai Stevenson

The Cold War

The Cold War: As state of political Hostility between two countries characterized by threats, propaganda and others measures short of actual warfare. In this case it was between the U.S. and the soviets.

Cold War Events During Eisenhower Era:

-Armistice signed in Korea

-French lost the battle of Dien Bien Phu

-France withdrew from Indochina and it split up into its constituent parts

-USSR and PRC offered aid to North Vietnam

-Soviet Union launched Sputnik

-Containment: U.S. offered aid to South Vietnam

-U.S. marines deployed to Lebanon to provide aid after the end of a short Civil war

-Castro Comes to power in Cuba

-American Spy Plane shot down over the USSR.

Joseph McCarthy

- Joseph McCarthy was an American Politician

-Served as a republican U.S. senator from the state of Wisconsin.

-Served from 1947-1957

-Became one of the most known politicians during the cold war by fueling the fear of wider spread communism

-Made claims that their were a large number of communists and Soviet spies within the U.S. government system.

-McCarthy had no evidence to back up the Majority of these claims and was eventually censured by the U.S. Senate.

-People found out that his accusations had been false and he became less popular among U.S. citizens

Eisenhower and Desegregation in the South

Little Rock Crisis:

-Little Rock Arkansas 1957

-Segregation in public schools had just been made illegal

-Governor Orval Faubus ordered the Arkansas National Guard to stop all African Americans from enrolling at Central High School (former all white school)

-9 African Americans slipped in and enrolled at the school which caused a large riot

-Eisenhower brought Federal troops in to stop the violence

-The Presidents efforts worked and African American students were able to enroll easily

-Eisenhower was criticized by both those who felt he didn't do enough to uphold the constitution and those who felt like he used too much federal power

Brown V. Board of Education:

-Case in December, 1952

-Landmark U.S. Supreme Court case

-declared state laws establishing separate public schools for blacks and whites was unconstitutional

-This case overturned the Plessy Vs. Ferguson decision of 1896 which allowed state sponsored segregation

-The case stated that racial segregation was a violation of the 14th amendment

-This made way for upcoming integration and it was a huge step for the civil rights movement

Montgomery Bus Boycott:

-December 1st 1955 to December 20th 1956

-Political protest/campaign against radical segragation of public transit systems in Montgomery Alabama

-Rosa parks, an african american woman, was arrest for not giving her seat on the bus up to a white person

-This led into the Browder Vs. Gayle case which delcared the segragating of transportation systems in Alabama unconstitutional

-Major figures of the civil rights movement (Martin Luther King Jr.) took part in the boycott

Civil Rights Act of 1957:

-Showed support for the supreme court's Brown decision

-Enacted september, 9th 1957

-led to integration of public schools

-primarliy a votin rights bill

-led to increased violence agaisnt blacks with incedents like the Little Rock Crisis
-Its technical goals was to ensure all Americans the right to vote

Eisenhower Republicanism Policies

-Focused on doing away with the Fair deal and New deal policies

-Did not want as much government regulation on the economy

-his policy was called modern republicanism

-This was a policy that kept the freedom of the market for each individual yet make sure that the government was their when the market needed assistance

-He wanted to lead the country down a road in between too much government intervention and too little government intervention

-He thought that the government should provide aditional benefits to some people

-Provided new programs that improved the nations ifrastructure

-Expanded social security, increased minimum wage aand created the Department of health, education and welfare

Beggining of the Vietnam War

-Began in December, 1956

-Between North Vietnam, supported by the Soviet Union and South Vietnam supported by the U.S.

-U.S. government viewed intervention as a way to stop the spread of cmmunist intervention in south Vietnam

-It was part of the containment strategy which was put in place to stop the spread of communism.

-U.S. thought that if one state went communist, than the other states in the region would fall to communism as well

-Soviet Union wanted to unify Vietnam under communist rule

Space Race with the Soviets

-Soviets shocked the world on October 4th, 1957 by launching Sputnik (a satellite) into space

-One month later, they sent another larger satellite into space carrying a dog

-These Soviet accomplishments shattered American self-confidence

-America had taken a back seat in scientific achievements and couldn't stand that the soviets had gotten to space first

-This lead to fear of the Soviets attacking the U.S. with the new and improved missiles

-The U.S. starts to spend millions on missle development

-Eventually the U.S. launched multiple smaller satellites into orbit

-U.S. puts millions of dollars in funds to improve education in science and math
